The Tour of Lake Iseo is generally considered moderate, requiring good fitness for its 63.9 km distance and approximately 493m of elevation gain. While some sources describe it as easy, regular cyclists with reasonable fitness should be able to complete it. It doesn't present significant technical difficulties, but be prepared for gentle inclines and slight climbs throughout the journey.
The route primarily consists of well-paved surfaces, making it ideal for road cycling. You'll find a mix of dedicated cycle paths and roadways. Some sections, like the beautiful Vello–Toline Lakeside Cycle Path, are car-free. While mostly smooth, a small percentage (around 6%) might be gravel. Expect stretches alongside dramatic rock faces and through tunnels, offering unique perspectives of the lake.
The route offers breathtaking views of the lake, mountains, and olive groves. You'll pass through charming towns like Pisogne and Lovere Historic Center and Lakeside Promenade. Don't miss the Riva di Solto Lakeside Promenade and Sarnico Lakeside Promenade for fantastic lake vistas. Natural highlights include the "Le Torbiere": Sebino Nature Reserve and views of Monte Isola, Europe's largest inhabited lake island.
The Tour of Lake Iseo is enjoyable for much of the year. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) generally offer pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds, making them ideal. Summer can be warm, but the lake breeze can provide some relief. Always check the local weather forecast before you go.
Many towns around Lake Iseo offer parking options. Starting points like Iseo, Sarnico, or Lovere are popular and typically have public parking available. It's advisable to check specific parking availability and fees for your chosen starting town before your visit.
Yes, a notable car-free section is the Vello–Toline Lakeside Cycle Path. This segment offers a particularly safe and serene cycling experience directly along the water, away from vehicle traffic.
No, there are no specific permits required or entrance fees to cycle the Tour of Lake Iseo. The route uses public roads and dedicated cycle paths that are freely accessible.
While the cycling route itself is public, specific rules for dogs may vary in towns and natural reserves along the way. If you plan to bring a dog, ensure it is well-behaved, kept on a leash, and that you clean up after it. Some establishments or specific sections of nature reserves might have restrictions.
The tour is generally considered moderate, so while it's not technically difficult, its length (63.9 km) and some elevation gain mean it's best for beginners or families with some cycling experience and a reasonable level of fitness. For a more relaxed experience, consider cycling only a section of the route or using an e-bike.
Absolutely! The route passes through numerous charming towns and villages such as Iseo, Sarnico, Lovere, and Pisogne. These towns offer plenty of opportunities for coffee breaks, lunch, or sampling local cuisine at cafes, restaurants, and gelaterias right along the lakeside.
Yes, bike rental services are available in several towns around Lake Iseo, particularly in popular starting points like Iseo and Sarnico. You can often find options for road bikes, e-bikes, and sometimes even touring bikes to suit your preference for the tour.
You get on your bike at 7 a.m. on a Sunday just to have nature all to yourself, and then in the first 30 minutes, it feels like 500 road cyclists are coming towards you. 🚵🏼♀️🚵♂️🚵🏽. I stopped counting and saying hello at some point, but of course I was there anyway. The route offers a lot of variety, although I preferred the east side of the lake with its quieter roads. If you do the loop early in the summer, as recorded, you can benefit from the shade of the mountains on the west side of the lake.
An almost flat round with many views over the lake. Almost all motorists take cyclists into account. Large trucks sometimes honk to let you know that they are overtaking you. The tunnels on this route are well lit, but a rear light is useful. More and more cycle paths are being added, which will make this route even safer. Highly recommended if you want a day of recovery from all the steep climbs in the area.
Panoramic tour around the lake. But he wasn't the only one with this idea. Never seen so many bikes in such a short time. Seems to be very popular The lake is simply fantastic, you always have the water in view and all the beautiful little towns. A real insider tip compared to Lake Garda. 👍🚤🚴🌞🏞️
Today's itinerary included a loop around Lake Iseo. Initially, I considered climbing a few meters, but then I decided against it and instead blasted around the lake. It was exactly the right decision. All the towns around the lake are beautiful and nowhere near as crowded as Lake Garda. Everything is much quieter and more relaxed, which I really like. This is also evident on the roads, where there are hardly any stressful situations and everyone generally gets along. I had to get used to the way of driving in Italy again. This is especially noticeable in roundabouts, when people cut you off... It's Italy, after all. Otherwise, it was a very relaxed ride. First, we headed north of the lake. This is also the most beautiful section of the tour, in my opinion. From behind Sulzano up to Costa Volpino, there is a wonderfully well-maintained cycle path where you can easily cycle really fast. It's particularly empty here in the early morning hours. This way you can really enjoy the lake and the peace and quiet. The nature is truly magnificent; with the lake and the surrounding mountains, it really is a beautiful panorama. To the north of the lake, some of the towns were a bit busier, and there were a few traffic jams. But that was easy to manage. After that, we carried on at a decent speed again. And it became increasingly clear that an average speed of 30 km/h was within reach today. So I tried to really push the pedals. At that point, I came across a mountain biker who stuck to me after I overtook him. We were traveling at about 36 km/h. Then he even started to overtake and took the lead. As you can see in one of the photos. It was amazing how he went. We took turns leading for over 20 km and had a fantastic ride along the lake. This really pushed the average speed up again. At some point he said goodbye, and I was on my own again. But the 31 km/h average, which is within reach, should now also be achieved. Which I managed. A truly great tour around the lake. With wonderful views. If anyone actually wants to follow the tour, please don't be surprised, I sometimes climb a little hill to take some nice photos. Have a nice weekend, everyone.
A fantastic tour!!!. We did the ride anti-clockwise from Iseo and had breathtaking views all day. The east side of the lake was stunningly pretty and easy riding as italian motorists Are very respectful of cyclists we've found! Around Toline there isa cycle track (traffic free this point) which winds By the side of the lake going through the occasional tunnel. Pisogne, at the top end of the lake is beautiful & made a great place for a drinks stop. Continuing around the lake the road leaves the lakeshore here for a while to cross the river and the railway it's not Long before you're back by the water. Lovere is about halfway round so made a perfect place for Lunch. Back on the bike at this section you get the only climb of the Route around Castro but it's a great exciting bit of road which clings to the hillside overlooking the water. All in all a special route & one we would definitely recommend 👍
