You can typically find parking in Locana, which serves as the starting point for this challenging cycling route. As it's a small town, street parking or designated public parking areas should be available, especially if you arrive early.
The best time to cycle this route is generally during the summer months, from June to September, when the pass is clear of snow and roads are fully open. A significant advantage is that on Sundays during summer, the road from Lake Serrù to the summit is often closed to motorized traffic, offering an exceptional car-free experience.
No, there are generally no specific permits or entrance fees required for cycling on the paved roads within Gran Paradiso National Park, including the route to Colle del Nivolet. However, always respect park regulations regarding wildlife and environmental protection.
While the route itself is a road cycling tour, dogs are generally allowed in Gran Paradiso National Park on a leash. If you plan to stop or explore areas off the main road, ensure your dog is always under control and follow park guidelines for pets.
This route is rated as difficult and requires very good fitness. While the average gradient from Locana is around 4.5%, you'll encounter long sections with gradients of 7-9%, and some parts can be as steep as 10-15%, with maximum gradients reaching up to 14%. The real challenge intensifies after Noasca.
The road surface is predominantly good quality tarmac, making it ideal for racebikes. However, be aware that some narrower stretches appear at higher altitudes. Overall, it's a well-maintained mountain road.
The route offers breathtaking scenery through the Orco Valley. You'll pass the Noasca Waterfall and ride beside pristine alpine lakes like Lago di Ceresole, Lake Serrù, and Lake Agnel. The upper sections are particularly spectacular, with rugged peaks, diverse rock formations, and pastures. You might even spot marmots.
Yes, during summer Sundays, the road from Lake Serrù to the summit of Colle del Nivolet is often closed to motorized traffic. This provides a unique opportunity for cyclists to enjoy the final, most scenic stretch without vehicle interference.
Yes, after Noasca, you'll encounter a 3.5-kilometer uphill tunnel. There is an older, reconditioned road that bypasses this tunnel. This alternative offers a more scenic but potentially more challenging climb with steep switchbacks and gradients reaching 10-15%, or even 16-17% in some sections. Lights are recommended if you choose the tunnel.
Yes, this route briefly intersects with several other trails. You'll find sections that overlap with the Sentiero Italia - Tappa E34Z, Sentiero Italia - Tappa E36, GTA: San Lorenzo - Noasca, and Via Alpina Blue D27, among others.
Yes, you'll pass through Ceresole Reale, a charming mountain village, which offers options for food and accommodation. It's a good place to refuel or consider an overnight stay before or after tackling the higher sections of the pass.
Yes, Colle del Nivolet is famous for several reasons. It was featured in the Giro d'Italia for the first time in 2019 and famously appeared in the original 1969 film "The Italian Job." The road itself was originally built between 1953 and 1963 to provide access to hydroelectric dams in the region.
In one word: amazing. 50km of climbing, but then you get something, what a view! The Nivolet is located in the middle of the Grand Paradiso national park, it is heavenly. Again from Susa by bus to the beginning of the Nivolet, but it was worth the drive
I finally brought my first 2000d+ home! It was about time! Too bad the track was cut by komoot
There are no words to describe the breathtaking landscape, a challenging climb that is rewarded by the beauty of the mountain. TOP tour!!
On the day that the provincial road 50 that goes up to Colle del Nivolet is closed to vehicular traffic, we decide to climb these splendid mountains. Due to an accident found on the road we arrive late in Locana, the beginning of the long climb. In fact, we start pedaling at 12, arriving in Ceresole at around 2 pm. Perfect temperature and wind that incredibly comes from behind, pushing us gently towards the summit. Several cyclists are already descending but we stubbornly continue the climb immersed in a landscape that becomes increasingly barren until it becomes almost lunar. The snow on the sides of the road makes us understand that we are almost there. At the top I meet some fearless Bromptonians and off we go downhill to get to the car at 6 pm, meeting Teresina, the fox of the dam. The most beautiful climb I have ever done.
