Path with magnificent views of the Mont-rebei gorge through which it runs. We will find narrower parts of the route, so do not trust us and keep our eyes open during the route. On weekends we can find more people than usual.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the terrain like on the Montrebei Gorge trail?

The trail features narrow paths, some dramatically carved directly into the steep rock faces of the ravines, with sheer drops to the Noguera Ribagorçana river. You'll encounter footbridges, including a 40-meter-high suspension bridge, and wooden stairs bolted onto cliff faces. The scenery is breathtaking, with turquoise-green water, lush forests, and views of the wider Montsec range.

Is the Montrebei Gorge trail suitable for beginners or families?

The initial part of the main Gorge Trail is generally considered an easy and shaded walk, suitable for many visitors, including families. However, sections with wooden stairs and pathways can be intimidating for those with a fear of heights, though they are safe with cable handrails. More demanding routes, like extensions towards the Montfalcó Walkways or a cave climb with metal chains, are more strenuous and recommended for experienced hikers.

What can I see along the route?

The main highlight is the dramatic Mont-rebei Gorge itself, with its unique carved-out paths and towering rock walls. You'll also experience the thrill of wooden zigzag stairs bolted into cliff faces and high suspension bridges. The emerald blue water of the Noguera Ribagorçana river and panoramic vistas of the surrounding Montsec mountains are ever-present. Keep an eye out for diverse wildlife, including vultures and foxes.

Does the trail intersect other well-known paths?

Yes, the route intersects with several other paths. You'll find sections of El Camí IT1TR7 El Camí Capçaler: de Salzes a Balaguer, La Pertusa-Congost de Mont-rebei, and Sender Històric: Catalunya. Other notable intersecting trails include Congost de Mont-rebei, Sender del Congost de Mont-rebei, and Camí natural de Montfalcó al Congost de Mont-rebei.

What is the best time of year to visit Montrebei Gorge?

The Montrebei Gorge offers a spectacular experience year-round, but spring and autumn generally provide the most pleasant hiking conditions with milder temperatures. Summer can be very hot, especially on exposed sections, while winter can bring colder weather. Always check the weather forecast before your visit.

Is the Montrebei Gorge trail dog-friendly?

Yes, the main gorge section is generally considered dog-friendly, and many visitors bring their dogs. However, always ensure your dog is on a leash, especially in narrow or exposed sections, and be mindful of other hikers and wildlife. Some more challenging extensions might not be suitable for all dogs.

Do I need a permit or is there an entrance fee for Montrebei Gorge?

While there isn't typically an entrance fee for the Mont-rebei Gorge Natural Reserve itself, due to its popularity, especially during peak seasons, it is highly advisable to book parking in advance. This helps manage visitor numbers and ensures access to the trailheads.

Where does the trail start and where can I park?

The main trailheads for the Montrebei Gorge are typically accessed from areas like La Pertusa or the Montfalcó hostel side. Given the trail's popularity, especially during peak times, it is strongly recommended to book your parking in advance to secure a spot and ensure smooth access to the trail.

What should I bring for a hike in Montrebei Gorge?

For a hike in the Montrebei Gorge, you should bring plenty of water, especially on warmer days, as water sources are limited. Sturdy hiking shoes with good grip are essential for the varied terrain, including rocky paths and wooden stairs. Sun protection (hat, sunscreen) is advisable, along with snacks, a first-aid kit, and a camera to capture the stunning views. Consider trekking poles for added stability.

Is the Montrebei Gorge — Montsec Range a loop trail or out-and-back?

The core Montrebei Gorge trail is primarily an out-and-back route, often starting from one side of the gorge and returning the same way. However, it connects to other trails and walkways, such as those leading to Montfalcó, which can allow for longer, more varied, or even circular routes if you arrange transportation or plan a multi-day trek.

What makes the Montrebei Gorge trail unique?

The Montrebei Gorge is unique for being the only gorge in Spain with a historic bridle path carved directly into the rock, making it exceptionally accessible. Its dramatic architecture, including wooden zigzag stairs bolted into cliff faces and high suspension bridges, offers an exhilarating experience. The gorge also serves as a natural boundary between Catalonia and Aragon, with a footbridge connecting the two regions.

May 18, 2023, Walking to Congost de Mont-rebei

We started the hike from the north side. Parking costs 10 € and a coffee and toilet are right at the start. The hike is fully secured with ropes and the exposed areas always offer 1.5m of space. Think also for not afraid of heights an experience. On the way there are many benches to rest. We ended the hike at the end of the gorge. Then you could still overcome a very high suspension bridge and the highlight is the staircase that was brought directly into the steep rock. But here you should absolutely be free from giddiness. Have fun hiking.

Very nice walk through the gorge. Impressive views and cool paths. Some spicy bits here and there. Start of the walk at aparcamant de la Masieta. Online a ticket for the parking costs 8 euros, on site 10 euros. The walk goes back and forth via the same route (9 km in total). You can continue to Montfalco (via the imposing bridges against the rock). But this part was completely in the sun and for this you have to count 2 hours extra back and forth. Water was way too low to rent a kayak.
