Embark on the Rothbury & Bellingham loop, a difficult mountain biking adventure spanning 51.6 miles (83.0 km) with a significant 3284 feet (1001 metres) of elevation gain. This challenging route, typically taking around 6 hours and 29 minutes, winds through Northumberland's diverse landscapes. You will encounter a mix of unpaved paths, singletrack, and quiet roads, with a substantial climb out of Rothbury leading to rewarding views from the Simonside Hills. Keep an eye out for wild goats and red grouse as you ride.

This hard mountain bike ride demands very good fitness and advanced riding skills. Be prepared for numerous tough climbs, including a strenuous ascent onto the Simonside Hills from Rothbury. Training is essential to fully enjoy the experience. If you plan your visit for late summer or early autumn, you will be treated to vast purple carpets of heather in full bloom on Simonside. Rothbury serves as an ideal base for exploring the region, and you can find a unique stop at the Carriages Tea Room in Bellingham.

The Rothbury & Bellingham loop is a segment of the larger 120-mile (193 km) Sandstone Way, a dedicated mountain biking route. It traverses a sandstone ridge, linking various sandstone features and outcrops that give the trail its name. The route is predominantly off-road and requires a capable hardtail or full-suspension mountain bike. The area is rich in cultural heritage, with castles and fortifications visible along the way, offering a sense of achievement due to its technical challenges and scenic vistas.

Rothbury Village Centre

Highlight • Settlement

Rothbury is a peaceful town in the heart of Northumberland. Close to the hills and the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it is an ideal base for explorations. You find a good choice of accommodation, places to eat and drink, as well as shops and other attractions within the town. One of the major attractions nearby is Cragside House, gardens and estate, former home of the Victorian industrialist Lord Armstrong. The house was the first to be lit by hydroelectricity.

Viewpoint on Simonside Hills

Highlight • Trail

The climb from Rothbury is nearly 300m elevation gain, but it's really worth it when you see the views here on a clear day. For the very, very best experience, come up in Simonside when the heather is in full bloom in late summer and early autumn, great swathes of purple carpet. Keep an eye out for wild goats and red grouse too!
