Rumpissa Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

Although Catalan is spoken on both sides of the pass, this pass at 535m marks the border between Spain and France, separating the municipalities of Banyuls de la Marenda, from Roussillon, and Colera, from Alt Empordà.

In 1940, the German philosopher Walter Benjamin fled the Nazi anti-Semitic persecution through this pass, taking refuge in Portbou.
In this municipality, the philosopher took his own life, and in honor of him the route from Portbou to Collado was named the Walter Benjamin Route.

Querroig Castle

Highlight • Castle

Great views of the two border towns Cerbére and Port Bou with their huge train stations.
Once upon a time there was a small castell, now only the base of a tower is left.

Trail Reviews

Francesc Garcia - MONTFRANC
April 11, 2024, Puig de Cervera i Torre de Querroig 💯 cims

Circular route starting and ending at Portbou station and ascending to Puig de Cervera and Torre de Querroig. Route with various incentives. - Extensive panoramic sea and mountain views. - Places included in the Walter Benjamin memorial. - Highlight the section to climb Puig de Cervera. The path, after skirting the cliffs that make up the northern part of the bay of Portbou, continues on a steep slope where we will have to use our hands to progress. IMPORTANT: It is not at all advisable to do this route on hot days with strong insolation, you also need to be on the lookout for strong tramontana (north wind) alerts that are very frequent in the area and could make it difficult or endanger hikers.
