Hiking
There are few Munros that take so little effort to hike up than Meall Buidhe. This is thanks to the high car park on the eastern end of Loch an Dàimh, which provides a starting elevation of around 1,340 feet (410 m). From here, it’s a quick out and back, with around 1,650 feet (500 m) of elevation gain.
From the car park, follow a track along the edge of the reservoir, which was once two lochs that were merged after the creation of the Giorra Dam in the 1950s. Loch Dàimh is remembered in the name of the reservoir, while Loch Giorra is remembered in the name of the dam.
A path heads up to Meall Buidhe’s southeast ridge and bypasses the minor summit of Meall a’ Phuill. The ascent can be a squelchy one, so waterproof footwear and gaiters are recommended. Eventually, you reach the broad and relatively flat summit ridge with splendid views in all directions.
Meall Buidhe’s summit is right on the northern edge of the mountainous land before the flat, watery expanse of Rannoch Moor. Due to this, it’s a great viewpoint for distant Lochaber where Ben Nevis rises above all else on a tumultuous skyline.
To return, follow the same way as you came up, enjoying views across Loch an Dàimh and the neighbouring Munro of Stuchd an Lochain.
