Cycling

On this varied tour you will experience the medieval town of Hersbruck, Hohenstein Castle, proudly enthroned on the mountain, and the romantic Pegnitz valley. You can reach the starting point of Hersbruck from Nuremberg with the regional express in less than a quarter of an hour. So nothing stands in the way of your medieval cycling adventure.

You leave Hersbruck through the valley of the Sittenbach. If you still need some energy, it is worth stopping at the “Green Tree” in Kühnhofen. It's best to ask about the bird soup, then you'll be flying up the mountain, so to speak. In Aspertshofen there is a small rest area where you can fill up your drinking water bottle again before tackling the first climb. It is now steadily uphill through a wonderful landscape. After a short descent and another ascent you will reach Hohenstein. If you don't want to cycle up the last steep stretch, you can also take a leisurely stroll.

The view from Hohenstein Castle is fantastic. From the 634 meter high rock plateau you can see far over the Franconian Switzerland to the Franconian Forest when the weather is clear. After so many meters of altitude, you've earned a little refreshment. The “Hohensteiner Hof” cream puff café at the foot of the castle is known for its delicious, huge cream puffs.

After the geographical, cultural and culinary highlight of the tour, it is almost all downhill. You roll down to Rupprechtstegen in the beautiful Pegnitztal. You follow the river that meanders through the narrow valley. Vorra is one of the most beautifully situated places in the valley and there two castles with a beautiful park and an interesting church are waiting to be discovered by you.

Via Eschenbach with its picturesque moated castle, it goes back to Hersbruck, where you zigzag through the town and the great old town. The medieval buildings and structures invite you to explore and linger. At the end you can make a detour to the Michelsberg, from the restaurant there you have an excellent view of Hersbruck and can end the day comfortably. If you are still looking for an alternative to the traditional isotonic shandy drink, ask about Pomme200. The delicious apple juice comes from the orchards in the region. There is a wide variety of variations.

The Hohensteiner Hof cream puff café has a reputation that extends at least as far as the view from Hohenstein Castle. Definitely go there! Warning: the cream puffs are huge. It is best to approach the portions with caution. They are available with a wide variety of fillings and variations (not only sweet, but sometimes hearty too). It is worth making a reservation in advance because it can get very busy here very quickly. Telephone number: 09152 533

Opening times: closed Monday and Tuesday, Wednesday to Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. (possibly also until 6 p.m.)

Hohenstein Castle

Highlight • Castle

The highest point in the Nuremberg region, so you also have a beautiful view here. Visiting the castle requires some off-road mobility, but is highly recommended.

In winter, when there is snow, there is a ski lift with a toboggan run nearby. There are a few restaurants in town, the cream puffs served here are well known. You should have a craving for sweets, the cream puffs are large and filled with plenty of cream.

Absolutely take a look. Located directly on the Pegnitz, the Café Inselblick offers the ideal resting and refreshments on cycling and hiking tours. On the small terrace, directly above the Pegnitz, hot and cold drinks, lovingly cooked dishes and very delicious, homemade cakes are served. The bridge is followed by a beer garden (self-service), where you can also eat brought food. If you are traveling by e-bike, you can look forward to several battery charging stations directly at the café.

Between Eschenbach and Hohenstadt you hike on a beautiful path through the picturesque Pegnitztal. Here you have a beautiful view over the lush meadows, the meandering river and the forested slopes - especially nice when a flock of sheep grazes in the valley.

Hersbruck Rose Garden

Highlight • Structure

The rose garden is a very beautiful, small park in the east of the city and a popular place for the people of Hersbruck to relax and unwind. In addition to the beautifully laid out flowerbeds with roses and other beautiful flowers, you can also look at various works of art. There is also a lovely playground for the little ones. The Bocchetta memorial and the memorial stone for the deported Sinti from Hersbruck are also located here as a reminder of the city's history during the Nazi era.

Hersbruck Castle

Highlight • Castle

Built before 1000 as a castle to protect the Pegnitz Bridge. In 1360, Emperor Charles IV bought the land and had a house built for the New Bohemian administrator. In 1557 the old walls were laid in and a new official castle was built for the Nuremberg keeper. In 1616 it was raised and expanded. Since then it has remained almost unchanged in its structural substance. Magnificent stucco ceilings have been preserved inside. Instead of a tenth barn, a prison (Fronfeste) was built on the east side of the castle courtyard in 1840. It was the seat of the caretaker, district office and district office - today it is the district court.

Hersbruck is a town worth seeing with several historic buildings, several restaurants, cafes and a centrally located shady beer garden with normal prices. The baroque market fountain (1693) is located in front of the town hall. The deer has been on the city's coat of arms since the 16th century.

August 23, 2024, Berg- und Taltour von Hersbruck nach Hohenstein und an der Pegnitz entlang zurück

Komoot suggested the tour as a hill and valley. We took back roads to Hohenstein. At the Hohensteiner Hof, there are cream puffs in various variations and they are very tasty. From Ruprechtstegen, the cycle path goes along the Pegnitz. This is the most beautiful part of the tour.

Today we went on another completed "circuit" of the Nuremberg region, Tour 7: "Mountain and valley tour". The starting point for the cycling tour is the Plärrer car park in Hersbruck, but of course you can also start at another point on the route. The tour goes via Altensittenbach into the Sittenbach valley and further to the landmark of the Nuremberg region, the "Hohenstein Castle". The castle sits high up on the rock (634 m above sea level) and can also be visited on Sundays and public holidays. A visit, €2.50 admission, is definitely worth it and if the visibility is good you can see from the castle tower to the Franconian Forest and far into the Upper Palatinate. In Hohenstein you have reached the highest point of the tour and from now on it goes downhill to Rupprechtstegen in the Pegnitz valley. Along the meandering Pegnitz you now enjoy a pleasant ride through the Pegnitz meadows back towards Hohenstadt and then to Hersbruck back to the starting point. The entire tour is "not easy" and after Hohenstein it goes uphill for about 5 km, which is why I think it is something for ambitious cyclists and not really suitable for families with children. For e-cyclists, however, the tour is a real treat in terms of scenery and cuisine. There are a variety of places to stop for a bite to eat, whether it's inns, cafés or ice cream parlors, and you have to decide on a place, even if it's difficult. Great pleasure tour from the Nuremberg region's program, the tour is worth it and is really fun!

A very, very beautiful, but also demanding and very varied tour in the upper Pegnitztal 🤗😊😎👍💪😄. At the beginning it goes comfortably along the Pegnitz to Rupprechtstegen through the beautiful valley, through beautiful villages and again and again with a very worth seeing and unique nature 😀😁👌. From Rupprechtstegen then a very bumpy and sometimes very demanding path to Aspertshofen with steep climbs 🥶😱 and beautiful long descents 😁😊😇, but the landscape leaves nothing to be desired at all 👍💪👌. The last stretch from Aspertshofen runs flat again to the starting point 😊😇😎. All in all, a tour on almost exclusively paved paths, where everyone can get their money's worth - highly recommended 😎😇😊🤟🥰😉👍

Start was today in Altensittenbach. Along the Sittenbach we went up to Hohenstein. Of course we had to eat a wind puff here. 😋 We went down to Rupprechtstegen and from there just enjoyed the wonderful Pegnitztal. 🥰 At Düsselbach a short detour to the stone channel, via Alfalter and Eschenbach we went back towards Hersbruck. Enjoyed a short reward at Michelsberg and then let the wonderful tour end.🍻🙋‍♂️
