Embark on the Topsham loop to Woodbury Castle & the Exe Estuary, a moderate mountain biking adventure spanning 18.7 miles (30.0 km) with 1136 feet (346 metres) of elevation gain, typically completed in 2 hours and 15 minutes. This route offers a striking contrast, beginning with the flat, scenic pathways of the Exe Estuary Trail, where you'll enjoy picturesque waterside views and abundant birdlife. The journey then transitions to the varied and often thrilling terrain of Woodbury Common, leading you through open heathland and dense forests, with expansive views over the Exe Estuary from Woodbury Castle.

Planning your visit, you'll find the Exe Estuary Trail is largely traffic-free and well-maintained, featuring tarmac and boardwalk sections. However, the connecting path from Exton to Woodbury village is a single-lane track that can be rough and may have small splashes of water, making a mountain bike essential. While the estuary section is generally easy, the ascent to Woodbury Castle and the common trails require good fitness and can be challenging, with some sections potentially requiring you to push your bike. Always be prepared for varied conditions on the common.

This loop is notable for combining two distinct and celebrated cycling experiences. The Exe Estuary Trail is renowned as one of the UK's most scenic and rewarding routes, forming part of the National Cycle Network Route 2 and passing through RSPB nature reserves. Woodbury Common, on the other hand, is a diverse network of mountain biking trails catering to various skill levels, known for its blend of natural beauty and exciting terrain. It even serves as a training ground for the Royal Marines, adding to its unique character.

Exton Bridleway

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Brilliant linking way from the Exe Estuary path at Exton up towards the village of Woodbury. It's a single lane-width track that's rough in places, so better suited to gravel, cross and MTB rather than road bikes. There's also a few little splashes to navigate, although there are bridge alternatives. Look out for the dairy cows as you go!

An Iron Age hillfort now cloaked in beech trees, Woodbury Castle sits high on beautiful heathland. It has exceptional earthworks and you can roam amongst its ramparts and down into its heart. You’ll find interpretation boards dotted around the castle, explaining the importance of the fort and plenty of archaeological details.

Much stewardship work has gone on in recent years, with earthwork stabilisation and strategic tree management. The castle is free to access and is a fantastic place to see in every season. It also lies within the Pebblebed Heaths Conservation Area and is home to a variety of bird, animal and plant life.
