Mountain biking

The Jacob's Ladder and Lord's Seat loop offers a challenging mountain biking experience in the Peak District National Park. This difficult 14.2-mile (22.9 km) route features significant climbing and technical descents, with an elevation gain of 2450 feet (747 metres) that you can expect to complete in about 2 hours and 28 minutes. You will encounter diverse terrain, from gravel and grassy ruts to rocky paths, loose rock gardens, and even boggy moorland sections, especially in wet conditions. The trail boasts magnificent 360-degree panoramic views, particularly from Lord's Seat, where you can see expansive vistas over the Edale and Hope Valleys. Expect high-moorland singletrack and weathered gritstone outcrops, providing quintessential Peak District landscapes.

This loop is consistently rated as hard to very hard, requiring good fitness and advanced riding skills. You should be prepared for tough, challenging climbs and physical descents that demand your full attention; some portions may even require pushing your bike. The trail's natural, rugged character means conditions can change with loose rocks and flowing water, so check the weather before you go. While the research doesn't explicitly mention trailhead access, parking, or public transport, it does highlight that some sections, like Rushup Edge, can be a slog when wet, suggesting dry conditions are preferable.

Considered one of the best mountain bike trails in the UK, this loop is a classic Peak District ride. Its most notable feature is the iconic Jacob's Ladder descent, a steep, rocky, and technical section often cited as the best descent in the Peak District. The route also includes Rushup Edge and Roych Clough, offering a mix of challenging climbing and fun, technical downhill sections. Lord's Seat is not only a high point with exceptional views but also an ancient tumulus, adding a layer of historical intrigue to the natural beauty.

Rushup Edge

Highlight (Segment) • Summit

The only way is up! Great when dry, a bit of a slog when wet. The terrain is mixed, with some recent maintenance on the shared-use path at the start. This soon gives way as the trail forks, then flattens out into a rutted section across the top of Rushup Edge. More stunning views open up down the valley.

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Together with Coldwell Clough, this descent is more than a mile of fast and fun downhill riding taking you back down to Hayfield. Rocks and stones give way to soil (mud) as you finish in Elle Bank Wood and on to Valley Road alongside the river.

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Climb that ranges from tiny potato size rocks to big boulders that you need to slog your way over. Steep and lung busting in places, the views do make up for this though. Traversing strip that eventually leads to the famous Jacobs Ladder Descent, which is pretty wild!

Trail Reviews

Rob
December 3, 2022, Mam Tor and Jacobs Ladder Loop from Edale.

If the car park is full, loads of places ro park back up the hill /road towards Mam Tor

First go ever riding the famous Peaks Ride, Jacob's Ladder! With @Kell's mega planning, we rode some mega climbs and had hot arms holding on on the descents! Nothing quite beats the incredible views near the famous Ladder though 🤩 10/10 would recommend to a intermediately fit friend 🥳

@Bron and I headed out to the Jacobs Ladder loop from Edale. It's a fab ride, sweet views, mega descents- spicy rating from 🌶 to 🌶🌶🌶 and some (loads) of climbing to get stuck into. At parts of the ride I had some vibes it was going to be type 2 fun, but managed to smile throughout. Great to revisit a Peak classic mtb ride with 75% less fitness than I had on the last encounter. 10/10 would recommend.

I would recommend you park in the main car park in Edale as there's toilets, a coffee shop & two pubs very close by. The original tour starts from Barber Booth where there are no facilities.

Classic High Peak MTB Loop, in the words of @Kell "parts of this ride has vibes of Type 2 fun". This is a PROPER MTB ride with four long, steep & rocky climbs followed by four long, steep & rocky descents. Including the famous Jacobs Ladder there are magnificent views of the Valley all the way around, a thorough test of both the rider & the bike, tough & technical 🌶🌶🌶
