This cycling tour is classified as a moderate bike ride. While it's largely on paved surfaces, covering about 48.3 kilometers (30 miles) with approximately 360 meters (1181 feet) of elevation gain and descent, it does require good fitness. It's more challenging than an easy ride, so be prepared for a solid effort.
The route primarily features paved surfaces. Approximately 47.3 kilometers are asphalt, with an additional 923 meters paved. There are less than 100 meters of cobblestones. While mostly smooth, some segments in the region classified as moderate can occasionally include unpaved sections, so be mindful of your bike choice.
You'll discover Europe's southernmost shoreline with golden beaches and Mediterranean vegetation. Highlights include the Donnalucata Seafront Promenade, the Marina di Ragusa Promenade and Marina, and the charming village of Punta Secca with its iconic lighthouse. Fans of "Inspector Montalbano" will recognize the Montalbano's House and other filming locations.
Given its moderate difficulty, distance, and elevation changes, this route is best suited for cyclists with good fitness. While predominantly paved, it might be challenging for very young children or absolute beginners. Families with older, experienced cycling children might enjoy it, but it's not an easy, flat ride.
To best enjoy the coastal scenery and avoid extreme heat, the spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) months are ideal. The weather is typically pleasant for cycling, and you can still enjoy the beautiful beaches without the peak summer crowds.
While specific parking areas aren't detailed, Scicli, as the starting and ending point of this ring tour, offers various public parking options within or near its historic center. It's advisable to look for parking near the town's main squares or designated parking lots.
While there are no specific restrictions against dogs on public roads and cycle paths, consider the 48.3 km distance and moderate difficulty. Ensure your dog is fit enough for such a long ride, perhaps in a bike trailer, and always keep them on a leash where required, especially in populated areas or near wildlife.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to cycle this route. It primarily uses public roads and cycle paths. However, individual attractions or sites you might choose to visit along the way may have their own entry fees.
Yes, as the route passes through several towns and fishing villages like Donnalucata, Marina di Ragusa, and Punta Secca, you'll find cafes, restaurants, and accommodation options. These spots are perfect for a break, a meal, or an overnight stay, especially in the more developed coastal areas.
Yes, this route intersects with several other paths. You'll find sections that are part of the Ciclovia del Sole, as well as smaller local trails like the Pista Ciclabile Carmelo Dipasquale, Sentiero del Carrubo, and Sentiero del Gelso, offering potential for extended exploration.
This route offers a unique blend of Baroque charm in Scicli, continuous stunning coastal views with golden beaches, and the allure of the "Inspector Montalbano" TV series filming locations. It's a fantastic way to experience the cultural and natural beauty of southeast Sicily.
We reach Scicli by car and, given the time, we decide to visit the city at the end of the tour. Bad idea, we would have said later. We set off for Donnalucata, where an elderly parishioner tells us that he had his church renovated thanks to the intercession of Pope Francis. In a private audience he explained to him how slow the bureaucrats of his town were. He replied: "now the problems are solved". In four months the work was completed. It really seemed like the first chapter of a story by Camilleri, who accompanies us today for the entire route. The fishermen's houses facing the sea with few frills, but more than dignified, make you want to slow down. We proceed on a red cycle path along the sea for a few kilometers to Marina di Ragusa, a very beautiful tourist center with many pedestrian areas and a beautiful square full of restaurants and places to stop for a drink. A few more kilometers and we are in Punta Secca.
