This loop tour is rated as difficult. While the Valsugana Cycle Path section is mostly flat and easy, the route to Arte Sella involves significant climbs with slopes exceeding 10%. It requires good to very good fitness and some cycling experience, especially for the mountain sections.
The terrain is varied. The Valsugana Cycle Path is predominantly flat and well-paved, following the Brenta River. In contrast, the section leading to Arte Sella is hilly and mountainous, characterized by demanding ascents through forests and meadows.
You'll experience the scenic Valsugana Cycle Path, passing through picturesque villages and alongside Lake Caldonazzo. The tour also takes you through the Historic Center of Borgo Valsugana and includes the unique open-air art museum, Arte Sella, where natural elements are transformed into striking artworks.
The tour is approximately 42.9 km long with about 870 meters of elevation gain. On average, it takes around 3 hours and 16 minutes to complete by touring bicycle, but this can vary based on your fitness level and how much time you spend at Arte Sella.
You can typically find parking in towns along the Valsugana Cycle Path, such as Borgo Valsugana or Levico Terme. The Valsugana path also runs parallel to a railway line, offering convenient 'Train + Bike' options if you wish to shorten your ride or return to your starting point by public transport.
The best time to cycle this loop tour is generally from spring to autumn. During these seasons, the weather is most favorable, and the natural art installations at Arte Sella are in full display, evolving with the surrounding nature.
The Valsugana Cycle Path is generally dog-friendly, but specific rules for dogs at Arte Sella may apply. It's advisable to check their official website (visitvalsugana.it) for the most current regulations regarding pets within the art park.
Cycling the Valsugana Cycle Path itself does not require a fee. However, Arte Sella is an open-air museum and typically requires an entrance ticket. You should check their official website for current pricing and opening hours before your visit.
Yes, along the Valsugana Cycle Path, you'll find 'Bicigrills' like Bici Grill Bester, which offer refreshments, snacks, and bike repair services. Towns like Borgo Valsugana also provide various amenities.
Yes, this route incorporates significant sections of the Ciclovia della Valsugana and also passes through parts of the Via Romea - Part Trentino and the historic Via Claudia Augusta. You'll also encounter smaller sections of trails like the Cammino del beato Enrico and ArteNatura Route.
Given the 'difficult' rating and the challenging climbs to Arte Sella, we recommend bringing a well-maintained touring bicycle suitable for varied terrain, a helmet, sufficient water, snacks, and appropriate cycling attire. A basic repair kit is also advisable. Consider a mountain bike if you prefer more stability on the steeper sections.
While the tour can be done in either direction, many cyclists find it strategic to tackle the more demanding climbs towards Arte Sella when they are freshest. Consider starting from Borgo Valsugana and heading towards the Val di Sella first, then enjoying the more relaxed descent and flat sections of the Valsugana Cycle Path later in your ride.
I state that I made this ring in mtb e-bike. Up to Arte Sella everything is perfect even if there is a nice climb, however feasible, while from arte Sella to go down is not a cycle path but a narrow, steep path full of pebbles that I had to walk bike in hand for about 5 km which seemed like an eternity. So I strongly recommend @@@ to go back once you get to arte Sella.
The tour along the Brenta River is nice to ride, the mountain road is easy to manage with an e-bike, but not recommended as there is no view of the valley possible. The descent is not a journey, but rather pushing on stony hiking trails. Conclusion: NOT recommended. How a tour like this can be labeled as a bike tour is a mystery to me.
Unfortunately, it was not possible to continue the journey from Arte Sella 2nd station.
