Frigiliana White Village

Highlight • Settlement

The white mountain village of Frigiliana on the southern foothills of the Sierra Almijara has been voted the most beautiful village in Andalusia several times.
Since the Neolithic Age and around 3,000 BC, the surrounding region has also been inhabited mainly in caves by the inhabitants of that time known. A mighty menhir north-east of the city center of Frigiliana provides information about this.

Plaza de las Américas, Torrox

Highlight • Settlement

Torrox is a charming town worth seeing and is part of the Axarquía region. The town is located east of Málaga and offers cultural diversity, a pleasant Mediterranean climate and a beautiful coastline. Torrox is a wonderful touring destination for those who want to experience the other side of the Costa del Sol as well as traditional Andalusian culture, while also having access to wonderful beaches and further cycling routes.

The picturesque old village of Torrox Pueblo on the hill offers a charming contrast to the modern coastal area. The Plaza de las Américas is a central meeting point with cafes and shops.

Virgen del Mar Memorial

Highlight • Religious Site

On the steep coast you can find this rock, on which a white miniature chapel stands. A few niches have been carved into the rock, in which, among other things, a picture of the Virgin del Carmen (patron saint of fishermen and sailors) is kept. People put flowers there, light candles and place small, inscribed stones on the rock. With the sea in the background and the view of the coast, it is a real eye-catcher. A point of attraction, it was very well attended.

This 15th century conical watchtower stands at a height of about 40 metres and is clearly visible from the road. The tower is located on private, fenced, inaccessible land, so it can only be viewed from below.

A quieter and lesser-known stretch of coast around Nerja. This region is characterized by natural coves, often located away from the main beaches and less frequented. The beach consists of pebbles and sand, surrounded by rocks. The nearby river (although usually dry) shapes the surrounding area and provides a beautiful backdrop.

What is the best time of year to cycle this route?

The Costa del Sol region, including Nerja and Torrox, is known for having a pleasant climate. April 28, 2023, Torrox – Costa, Torrox, Frigiliana, Nerja und zurück.

The strenuous bike ride went back to the pitch via Torrox, Frigiliana and Nerja. There were some gradients over 10% and also a single trail. But at the top you had a great view. A break in Frigiliana had to be.

Frigiliana is better explored on foot, it seems worth it! 😅 I ended up in a dead end again 🤦🏻‍♀️ But other than that, it was a tour with beautiful views 😀

Wonderful views, a fairly easy hike around Torrox.

Easy ride. Be careful of the steep, sharp hairpins on the downhill into Torrox.

Today I visited one of the many "Pueblos Blankos" white villages nested in the mountains of the region. Frigiliana was very busy as many Spaniards are enjoying time off during the Holy Week. I went down to the canyon of the Higueron river to test the ride along the hiking trail that follows the river. It is very rough, full suspension bike would be recommended. As you can see, views along the ride were incredible. Going down the serpentines was icing on the cake. Happy trails 🍻🚴

Glorious day for more exploring of the area. I did this loop previously but in opposite direction. I like to do the same route in both directions which gives me completely different prospective. I did little detour to the remote village of Acebuchal, also called lost village, nested in the hidden Valley of the mountain. People are repainting houses and churches as few months ago this area was hit by the sand storm from Africa which left everything tinted in sand colour. Happy trails.
