The loop is approximately 7.2 km (4.5 miles) long and generally takes around 2 hours of active walking to complete. This duration can vary depending on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the views or swim.
The trail offers varied terrain, including easily accessible paths, natural unpaved sections, and some rocky stretches, especially along the coastline. You'll also encounter wooden stairways, gravel, and occasional paved surfaces. Sure-footedness is recommended for some parts.
While some sections are easy and accessible, the overall difficulty is considered moderate due to rugged terrain in parts. It requires good fitness and sure-footedness. Beginners or families with young children might find certain rocky sections challenging, but it's generally manageable for those with some hiking experience.
This loop is renowned for its stunning coastal views, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and wild coves. You'll walk through Mediterranean vegetation, pine-fringed beaches, and discover the unique sandy Cap Taillat Isthmus. From viewpoints like View from Cap Taillat, you can see Cap Camarat, the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, and even Porquerolles island on a clear day.
The most common starting point for this loop is Escalet Beach (Plage de l'Escalet). There is parking available there, but it can fill up quickly, especially during peak season. Arriving early is advisable.
The trail is generally dog-friendly, but dogs should be kept on a leash, especially given that the area is part of the Conservatoire du Littoral and within the broader managed area of Port-Cros National Park. This helps protect the fragile ecosystem and local wildlife.
Spring and autumn are ideal for hiking this loop, offering pleasant temperatures and vibrant natural colors. In spring, the Cap Taillat isthmus is particularly beautiful. Summer can be very hot, making early morning or late afternoon hikes preferable, and always bring plenty of water.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this loop within the mainland section of Port-Cros National Park. However, as a protected natural area, visitors are urged to stay on marked paths to preserve the fragile ecosystem and allow plant species to regenerate.
Yes, the route incorporates sections of several well-known coastal paths. You will hike along parts of the Chemin de la Douane and various segments of the Sentier Littoral, which is famous for its scenic coastal views.
Absolutely! The trail passes by numerous small, wild, and preserved coves with fine sand and crystal-clear waters, such as Escalet Beach. These offer excellent opportunities for swimming and snorkeling, especially on a warm day.
Given the varied terrain and coastal exposure, it's recommended to bring sturdy hiking shoes, plenty of water, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and a swimsuit if you plan to take a dip in the coves. A camera is also a must for the stunning views!
If you are already on holiday in the Gulf of St-Tropez, then a coastal hike should not be missed. We were looking for azure waters and beaches that are secluded and only accessible on foot. I've done a hike in Cavaliere-sur-Mer before, but I won't show it to you because it was boring. Today was different. A real hit. The way to Cap Taillat was one great highlight. We passed several secluded beaches, some of which are nudist beaches. The 360 degree view from Cap Taillat was beautiful. The way back led us past a dolmen and along a high trail back to the parking lot. The large parking lot is already full from 10 a.m. in September.
In parts there is no hiking but climbing on the cliffs
A great hike, how nice you can tell by the time we needed: 4 hours! Gorgeous little hidden beaches and great views of the coast and the azure sea.
A wonderful hike along the coast and to the cape. The return journey over the mountain was unnecessary. Although it was a beautiful view, it was very difficult in places as it was overgrown with prickly plants.
Beautiful route right on the shoreline with crystal clear, turquoise water and a fantastic panorama. Some bathing beaches are either hiked through or could be easily reached. That's why you're welcome to take bath breaks. So there were plenty of people on the way up to Cap Taillat, after that we were almost alone. Caution: The way back was very steep and obviously little used due to the narrow path in the thorn bushes. Still a very nice view, once at the top it was worth the effort.
Fantastic round, which even elicited a spontaneous, benevolent comment from the rather taciturn young people when hiking 😉: "Woah [sort of like awesome😜], it's just as beautiful as Madeira ‼️". If you ever find yourself in this area - definitely do the round in this direction, not as recommended by komoot. 🧔🏻♂️😊
