Val Duron from Selva di Val Gardena - loop tour

Mountain biking

Embark on a difficult mountain biking loop through Val Duron from Selva di Val Gardena, covering 22.8 miles (36.8 km) with a significant 4789 feet (1460 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 4 hours and 24 minutes. This challenging route offers spectacular Dolomite scenery, transitioning from coniferous forests to expansive meadows with views of iconic peaks like the Rosengarten and Sassolungo. You will navigate primarily gravel roads, unpaved sections, and alpine paths, encountering steep climbs where gradients can reach up to 24% and some sections may require pushing your bike.

This demanding tour requires very good fitness and advanced riding skills, as the terrain includes rough gravel and steep ascents, particularly from the Fassa Valley into Val Duron. While the technical difficulty varies, be prepared for sections that may correspond to STS S3-S6. Along the way, you will find opportunities to rest and refuel at traditional mountain huts such as Rifugio Micheluzzi, Baita Lino Brach, and Zallinger, making for well-deserved breaks during your ride.

Val Duron is considered a natural gem, nestled between major Dolomite mountain groups and offering some of the most fascinating views in the region. Keep an eye out for semi-wild yaks and marmots as you traverse the valley. A memorable and challenging section of this route, including the Passo de Duron / Mahlknecht Joch, is even part of the annual Hero Dolomites race, highlighting its demanding nature and scenic beauty.

Val Duron, Gravel/MTB Trail

Highlight • Trail

After going up the road towards the Micheluzzi refuge, a spectacular view of the Val Duron opens up. Taxis do not pass here, but you will meet Yaks in a semi-wild state and some hikers heading towards Alpe di Tires. The dirt road follows the course of the river and passes some incredible views of this enchanted valley. Marmots that cross the road, spectacular farmhouses nestled between the greenery and the tough but wonderful climb towards Alpe di Tires. Worth the effort, to be covered with gravel or MTB with at least 40mm wheels.

With this tour I have resumed my sports activities in Trentino for the period of August / September. Together with my friends from Italy they once again pushed me to the limit of my performance. This was rewarded with the unbelievably impressive panorama - God must have liked it particularly well. If you find the time, look at the pictures in peace - it's worth it

Fabulous places, lots of routes to do. Memorable day

Certainly the most beautiful ride done so far, both for the route and for the dreamlike panorama.

To rest from the previous days, an electric ride: from Canazei up the val duron through the micheluzzi up to the Rif alpe di tires. Returning back to the Sasso Piatto refuge we completed the ring in the direction of the forest to go up towards the Rif comici and descend to Canazei from the saddle pass

What a trip today, the scenery was beautiful, but the paths were sometimes catastrophic. It's not cycling, it's more of a struggle. Even I cursed the condition of the paths at some point. Loose gravel and rubble made life difficult going uphill. That's not good for my wife. Going downhill is often no better. I won't go there again until the paths are paved for my wife😉🤣

My smartphone failed me and the tour reached 46 km and 1600 m. D+ from Passo Duron to Canazei did not register.
