This route was planned by komoot.
This circular walk is rated as moderate. It covers a distance of approximately 14.4 km (9 miles) with an elevation gain of around 349 meters (1,145 feet). Be prepared for varied terrain, including some steep slopes, steps, and occasional rough patches, particularly around areas like Chartwell and Emmetts Garden.
The terrain on this walk is quite varied. You'll traverse field paths, walled lanes, and sections through partially wooded valleys. Expect some steep slopes and steps, especially in areas like Emmetts Garden, along with occasional rough ground. There are also short stretches on roads, so be mindful of traffic.
This route offers several notable sights. You'll enjoy a View of the Weald from the site of Weardale Manor, pass by Chartwell House (Winston Churchill's former home), and experience the beautiful Bluebells at Emmetts Garden during spring. Another highlight is the View of the Weald of Kent from Toys Hill.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, please keep your dog on a lead, especially when passing through fields with livestock, near roads, and in sensitive natural areas like Emmetts Garden or Chartwell, where specific rules may apply. Always clean up after your pet.
The Komoot tour for this walk starts from Toys Hill. Parking is available at the National Trust car park at Toys Hill. Additional parking options may be found near Chartwell House or Emmetts Garden, though these might require a National Trust membership or payment.
The trail can be enjoyed year-round, but spring (for bluebells at Emmetts Garden) and autumn (for vibrant foliage and clear views) are particularly beautiful. Summer offers longer daylight hours, while winter can be peaceful but may involve muddy conditions and colder weather. Always check the forecast before you go.
No specific permits are required to hike the general public footpaths of the Weardale Circular Walk. However, if you wish to enter attractions like Chartwell House or Emmetts Garden, there will be separate entrance fees, unless you are a National Trust member. The trail is located within the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which does not require an entrance fee for access to public rights of way.
Yes, this route intersects with several other trails. Notably, it covers significant sections of the Greensand Way (53%), the Weardale Circular Walk From Chartwell (49%), and the Weardale Walk From Emmetts Garden, Emmetts (49%). You'll also find parts of the Octavia Hill Centenary walk west (34%) and Octavia Hill centenary trail east (32%) along the way.
While the full 14.4 km route is rated moderate, families with older children or beginners could consider shorter sections, particularly around Emmetts Garden or Chartwell, where there are often easier, waymarked loops. For example, the 'Red Walk, Emmetts' (27%) or 'Green Walk, Emmetts' (15%) are shorter options that overlap with parts of this trail.
Yes, you'll find amenities in nearby villages. Westerham, for instance, offers pubs and cafes. There are also facilities at Chartwell House and Emmetts Garden, including cafes, which are convenient stops if you plan your walk to pass through them during opening hours.
Given the moderate difficulty and varied terrain, wear sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support. Dress in layers suitable for the weather, as conditions can change. Bring water, snacks, a map or GPS device (like the Komoot app), and waterproofs, especially if hiking outside of peak summer. Trekking poles can be helpful on steeper sections.
Nice walk in nice weather. Easy parking at Toys Hill. Nice view of Chartwell House early on and a sneaky cut through the lovely Emmets Garden later. Westerham is a small detour half way round Lots of woods so plenty of shade and lots of ups and downs too so a decent workout that I really enjoyed 👍🙂🌞🌳🌳🌳
