Moustiers Sainte-Marie

Highlight • Settlement

Leaning against its wall, this village has a strong character. Ideally located between the Gorges du Verdon and the Lac de Sainte-Croix, it is one of the essentials of the Verdon Regional Natural Park.

Porte de Riou and Stone Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

You go through the Porte de Riou, a remnant of the fortifications of the old Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, and after a few meters you come to the Cascade de Riou. Even if the Riou does not have any water at the moment, you can easily guess how it falls at other times, its path is shown on smooth rock and hollowed stone, under a brick bridge down to the village.

From here you can soon return to the village on one of the paths, other paths lead further up to hikes with spectacular views of the mountains, the opening landscape and Lac Ste Croix.

The grotto itself is not very spectacular, but the view down into the village and into the area is all the more so. Even a view of Lac Ste. Croix can be caught. From here a path leads along the mountain to the Notre Dame de Beauvoir church, which is also high above the village, but you can also descend the same path and take a scenic hike up and around the surrounding mountains.

Above the village, surrounded by high limestone cliffs, stands the Notre-Dame-de-Beauvoir chapel. This Romanesque-Gothic building can only be reached on foot via an approx. 20-minute Way of the Cross, which leads up a stone staircase with 262 steps. When you arrive at the chapel you have a very nice view of the roofs of the village, the valley of the Maire and the impressive plateau of Valensole.
