This route was planned by komoot.
We did this really nice hike and were very surprised by the variety! Spring is showing up in March along the dried-up river bed :). However, the original Komoot hike leads along a part that is now occupied by private property. Following the path you come back to the path after a while. The last part of the loop can initially be followed by the GR at the upper part of the river, but later it is better to descend into the riverbed, as this part becomes steep and almost impassable. Have fun and don't forget sunscreen! 😊
From Frigiliana, I walked downstream along the Rio Higueròn. It's a constant descent along the riverbed. It's actually quite easy to walk, and on my hike in May, my feet even stayed dry. There's a tricky section where you drop several meters over smooth, washed-out stones. At first, I tried to climb around this spot to the right, but it soon became very exposed. But then I discovered the steps on the left. So I went back and tried the left side this time. There, too, it seemed hopeless at first until I finally found the steps. From then on, it was easy. It wasn't long before I left the Rio Higueròn to the left. The path is initially paved but soon becomes a narrow hiking trail that takes you to the Cruz de Pinto (with its small chapel). The trail continues parallel to the river, which then leads back towards Frigiliana.
We actually wanted to drive the double-walked section at the beginning. But given the very narrow road with a gradient of what felt like 30%, we decided to walk instead. That turned out to be really hard at the end of the tour. All of the paths on this hike are marked as hiking trails on Komoot. However, there were often signs pointing to private property. There were no real prohibition signs there, so we walked there too. The hike in the first part often has an alpine character, just as we imagined. It makes sense to go the tour in the direction given, then you don't have to tackle the sometimes considerable climbs in the midday heat. The view from the Cruz del Pinto of Frigiliana and Nerja with the sea behind them is overwhelming. If you like hiking in the Alps, this is the place for you. The descent followed narrow serpentines to the dried-up river valley of the Rio Higueron below Frigiliana. It is easy to walk along the gravel bed through the river bed lined with wonderfully flowering giant oleander bushes. Sometimes wide, sometimes very narrow and overgrown with trees and bushes. Towards the end of the hike, there is a sudden height difference of around 10 m. After we had overcome two sections in a rather adventurous way, we saw the stairs that we could then use for the rest. All in all, a great, very challenging hike for us, which we would repeat with the knowledge we now have.
Don't take the same start to the tour as the path is already pretty much destroyed. Also, there are no fuses attached. It is best to plan the tour in the other direction and then choose the same way to climb again. Otherwise super nice and varied.
Very strenuous hike because of the high temperatures of 32 degrees. Otherwise really nice T2 hike completely alone through the river bed and up the mountain 400 hm, not without in the heat. Great view over the place. No exposed areas, doable even with a fear of heights. There is plenty of free parking on site.
