Small, interesting park, which mainly shows plants of the "Sierra de Grazalema" nature park and explains a lot.

Old flour mill of which only the ruins of the building and the stones used to grind the grain are preserved. It is located on the banks of the Majaceite River, whose movement was used to move the mechanisms of the mill. In the surroundings there are small waterfalls that make this corner an idyllic place to walk.

Majaceite River Trail

Highlight • Trail

You hear or see the "Majaceite" all the time on this beautiful, varied, mostly shady path. Good shoes are recommended.

Directly at the start and end point of the Senderos is a car park, a restaurant with shaded areas, a tourist information office (open Wed-Sun 9am-3pm), a bus stop (damas-sa.es) and a public toilet.

Benamahoma, with its approx. 450 inhabitants, is also one of the "Pueblos Blancos". The town center is small, steep and beautiful. A water museum "Ecomuseo del Agua" and the "Molina del Susto" can be visited.

In theory, this path is an extension of the Sendero "Él Pinsapar" ("direction "Cementerio"), whereby this Sendero does not require a permit.

Is the Sendero del Río Majaceite dog-friendly?

The trail is very popular and generally considered family-friendly. While many visitors bring their dogs, it's always best to check the latest regulations for the Parque Natural de la Sierra de Grazalema regarding pets, especially leash requirements, to ensure a pleasant experience for everyone and protect local wildlife.

What is the best time of year to hike this trail?

The spring and autumn months are ideal for hiking the Sendero del Río Majaceite, offering pleasant temperatures and lush scenery. During summer, the gallery forest provides welcome shade, making it a viable option, but starting early in the morning is advisable to avoid the midday heat and larger crowds. Winter can also be beautiful, though cooler.

Are there any permits or entrance fees required for hiking in the Parque Natural de la Sierra de Grazalema?

Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Sendero del Río Majaceite itself, as it's a public trail within the natural park. However, some specific, more restricted routes within the wider Parque Natural de la Sierra de Grazalema may require permits, so it's always wise to check with the park's visitor center if you plan to explore beyond this trail.

How long does it take to hike the Sendero del Río Majaceite?

The trail is approximately 5.3 kilometers (3.3 miles) one way, connecting El Bosque and Benamahoma. Most hikers take about 1.5 to 2 hours to complete one direction, making the round trip roughly 3 to 4 hours, depending on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the scenery.

What is the terrain like on the trail?

The terrain is predominantly flat and linear, following the course of the Majaceite River. The path is well-compacted and clearly marked, making it accessible for most. While generally easy, there are some sections with small bridges and steps. Proper footwear is always recommended for comfort and stability.

What can I see along the route?

The trail offers a beautiful journey through a lush gallery forest with poplars, ash, and elm trees. You'll enjoy the continuous sound of the flowing river, small waterfalls, and mossy rocks. Notable features include the El Castillejo Botanical Garden near Benamahoma, the Honda Waterfall of Benamahoma, and the Ruins of the Majaceite River Water Mill, which hint at the area's history.

What wildlife and plants can I expect to see?

The river is home to trout and barbel, and if you're lucky, you might spot elusive otters. The rich forest canopy supports various bird species, including common blackbirds, grey wagtails, and nightingales. Interpretive panels along the path provide insights into the local ecosystem and flora of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park.

Does the trail intersect other well-known paths?

Yes, the route largely follows the official trail named RÍO MAJACEITE for about 97% of its length. It also briefly intersects with sections of the Sendero de Majaceite at various points.

Is swimming allowed in the Majaceite River?

While the river looks inviting, swimming is generally prohibited to protect the delicate environment and its wildlife. Although some spots might be unofficially used for bathing, visitors are strongly advised to respect park regulations and help preserve the natural integrity of the river.

Are there places to eat or drink near the trailheads?

Yes, both El Bosque and Benamahoma are charming white villages that offer a selection of cafes, restaurants, and pubs where you can enjoy local cuisine and refreshments before or after your hike. They are perfect for experiencing the local culture.
