El Cable Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

El Cable is the top station of the Fuente Dé cable car. The mechanical device is a kilometer and a half long, overcomes a drop of 750 meters in four minutes and leaves passengers at an altitude of 1,820 meters. The views are spectacular. In summer and while the mountain is snow-free, there is the possibility of walking up from the Fuente Dé car park through El Hachero, a dizzying path along an old mining road that ends at the balconies of El Cable. And there is also the option of the Canal de la Jendunda, which is a huge gutter on the left wall (west) of the great wall that forms the natural circus of the source of the Deva river. In winter these routes can be complicated by snow or ice and the best option is to use the cable car service to start the mountain crossing on the edge of the high Cantabrian mountains. In this case, check the schedules for the return.

Picos de Europa viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

This viewpoint offers incredible views from where you can see the cable to Fuente De and several other routes. It is worth stopping to see the path from above and take the opportunity to rest a little!

Horcados Rojos

Highlight • Summit

This is a steep area full of chasms with which we will have to take special care.

There is a descent through a crack, which is not complicated if done carefully. Better to do it without a backpack, although it can also be done with it. Once you pass it, you will see the high!

Verónica Cabin

Highlight • Mountain Hut

"Welcome to Planet Veronica!" What Jorge, the guard who receives anyone who wants to board this aircraft carrier/cabin in Picos, usually says. Nearby there are also bivouac areas and a unique rocky setting.

The cabin is the highest of all the Picos de Europa so it offers a unique perspective. Getting up early is a must to see a unique sunrise!

Trail Reviews

Wagging Tail ✨
June 21, 2024, PICOS D'EUROPE - Fuente Dé - Collado Delos Horcados Rojos

We had a very exciting day when both Fuente Dé and everything above 2000m were bathed in sunshine - in between there were swirling clouds that quickly dissipated in front of the heated walls. Others were less fortunate: even locals fear the sudden, thick fog (encainadas).

Actually, I had planned a circular route, that is, with the cable car up and down again on foot. Komoot shows paths, but many were not to be seen on site. So we're back down with the cable car. The area up here is fantastic. Something reminded me of the Dolomites.

A rocky loop among the cliffs in the central massif of the Picos de Europa National Park. The tour runs from the upper cable car station of El Cable in Fuente De (uphill and starting at €30) toward the Cabana Veronica mountain hut. The path is very steep and rocky, but offers breathtaking views of the Picos de Europa peaks from the Cantabrian side. Unfortunately, the marked mountain lakes were currently dry and barely visible. Nevertheless, it is a worthwhile hike.
