This section of the Camí de Cavalls is considered easy. It's a relatively short and flat walk, making it suitable for most fitness levels. The total distance is approximately 8.6 kilometers, with minimal elevation gain.
The trail features diverse terrain. You'll start with a wide, sandy beach at Cala Son Saura, then transition to a generally flat but somewhat rocky path along the coast. As you approach Cala Turqueta, the path enters a wooded area with denser vegetation, including wild olive, Aleppo pine, and holm oak.
This route is renowned for connecting three stunning, unspoilt beaches: Cala Son Saura, the smaller and beautiful Cala des Talaier, and the iconic Cala Turqueta, famous for its intense turquoise waters. You'll also enjoy continuous scenic coastal views and Mediterranean vegetation.
The trailhead for this section is located at Cala Son Saura. Parking is typically available, but it can fill up quickly, especially during peak season. Public transport options to Son Saura may also be available, but it's advisable to check local schedules in advance.
No, you do not need a permit or to pay an entrance fee to hike this section of the Camí de Cavalls. The trail is part of the Menorca Biosphere Reserve, and while access is generally free, visitors are encouraged to respect the natural environment, especially sensitive areas like the Prat de Bellavista wetland behind Son Saura beach.
The best time to hike is during the spring (April-May) or autumn (September-October) when the weather is milder and the crowds are smaller. Summer can be very hot, and the beaches will be much busier. Early mornings are also recommended to avoid the heat and secure parking.
Generally, dogs are allowed on the Camí de Cavalls. However, it's crucial to keep them on a leash to protect the local wildlife and ensure the safety and comfort of other hikers. Always clean up after your pet.
No, there are no facilities such as restrooms, food services, or water points available directly on this section of the trail or at Cala Turqueta itself. It's essential to bring all necessary supplies, including water and snacks, with you.
Given the lack of facilities, you should bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable walking shoes suitable for rocky and dusty paths. Swimwear and a towel are also recommended if you plan to enjoy the beautiful coves.
Yes, this trail is generally suitable for families with children due to its easy difficulty and relatively short distance. The beautiful beaches provide excellent spots for breaks and swimming. However, some sections can be rocky, so comfortable footwear is important for everyone.
Yes, this route is entirely part of the larger Camí de Cavalls (GR 223), which encircles the entire coast of Menorca. Specifically, this section covers 100% of the official 'Camí de Cavalls' path.
Literally a Paradise 😍 There is little to add!
Beautiful tour that connects two bays and a beach on the south coast of Menorca. The Cala en Turqueta in particular is stunningly beautiful and you can swim wonderfully! But the entire coastal path also has its charm! The starting point is the car park at the Cala en Turqueta. (Note: We started the tour in the early afternoon at the end of August 2024 and were lucky to get a parking space. There were parking attendants on the long access road who only let as many cars through as there was space to park. There is only one kiosk on the tour at the car park, so take enough food/water with you and remember sun protection!)
