Trail Reviews

Neil
October 20, 2024, Puig de Massanella tour

Tough scramble up the north side - need a good head for heights and always follows the stone markers - if you loose them, back track to the last point you saw them and renavigate from there - sometimes it may take some time to find them.

The starting point of the tour is the paid parking lot 🅿️ at the Lluc monastery. This can be reached by car from the direction of Pollença or Sóller via the MA-10 country road. The approach via the MA-10 is already very scenic. However, you share the road with all kinds of cyclists 🚴 who also enjoy the beauty. It is also possible to arrive by bus 🚌 from Pollença. The hiking trail initially follows the GR 221 and initially leads up through shady black oak groves past the ruins of historic ice cellars. In some places the path is paved correctly. We leave the tree line and continue to follow the signs of the GR 221. After a few kilometers we reach a wall that is clearly visible from afar. We use this place for a rest 🍌 before the final climb. First the path leads us downhill again. At a right turn we leave the GR 221 and find a path towards the summit 🏔️. Here you have to be careful, as the path is essentially marked by cairns 🗿. The path leads steeply uphill and requires a bit of "scrambling" in places. The view here is already breathtaking, although we have not yet reached the summit plateau. After a short further steep section and views of the interior of the island and Palma, we reach the summit plateau. The summit 🗻 of the Puig de Massanella with its 1,364 m is a little further back, but can be reached in a few minutes. From up here you have a fantastic view when the weather is clear. The path down requires a keen eye for cairns and the app. The descent is steep, partly over scree, then under trees. Passing the signpost to Font y Puig 💦 we reach the wider forest path, where the signposts to "Lluch" and "Ancor" can be found. Further on, the path passes a toll station as it leads over private property. Hikers have to pay €6. I suspect that since we are passing at the end of October and after 5 p.m., the station is no longer manned and we can pass free of charge. The path reaches the road where there is a gas station. This is the first opportunity to buy something. We do not do it as the starting point and destination of the hike are only a few minutes away. The first restaurant at the car park appears to be permanently closed. At the Lluc monastery, however, there is a second option where we reward ourselves with a Clara at the end 🍻.

A beautiful tour... but a lot of climbing. Somehow Komot didn't record the time properly. We were on the road for 8 hours.

This is a top-class hike! It meets all requirements. There are beautiful views. Your sure-footedness will really be tested. The alpine hiking trail is not too dangerous, but it is demanding. And your stamina will also be put to the test. There are no places to stop for refreshments, so think about bringing your own food...?!!! If you are fit, do it❗️

Great tour with an incredibly friendly encounter and the resulting ride back to Port de Polenca. Unfortunately, Karen got sick in the car. I hope everything went well inside. LG Karen and Thorsten

From the bus stop in Lluc, we first went up a few meters on the well-developed GR 221 long-distance hiking trail. From an altitude of about 1200 meters, we continued on a path marked as an alpine path in the direction of Puig de Massanella. At first it was just a little dangerous high-altitude trail before it got really intense. Full soup into the steep slope in strong wind, under constant fear of falling... After some rock climbing with a heart rate of 180 I finally proudly reached the plateau with the summit of the Puig de Massanella. After a short rest, the descent was much easier. It was mostly shady and wooded. Shortly before the end, a highwayman even took 6 € from me 😅

Climbed to heaven. The day begins in the shimmering twilight of the forest – cool air, the rustling under holm oaks, a touch of wind. Soon the path becomes narrower, steeper, rockier. We cross the last road, then only the mountain, only us. The snow house is soon behind us, as is the forest. Tufts of grass like waves in the wind. The south slope demands strength and courage. At the summit of Massanella: vastness, silence, a view to the horizon. The descent: easier, almost serene. And below – goats that eye us like old friends. A cool drink at the Col de Bataia. Everything done right.
