Ferrata reachable from Valmadrera. The progression takes place on a wall with some exposed sections, traverses on cable, but with well-visible metal holds. In the sections where the holds are further apart, the rock still offers good grips. In the second part, there are some ledges useful for resting. The panorama spans Valmadrera, Lake Lecco, Monte Barro, Lake Pusiano and Annone, and Resegone. In about 45-50 minutes, including the approach, you reach the summit of Corno Rat (924 m a.s.l.)

Great refuge, this year I found it closed due to a change in management. In November 2024, I ate a fantastic braised meat with polenta.

Lecco is indeed a hotspot for via ferratas. The region features demanding routes like the Ferrata Gamma 2 Summit – View From Resegone loop from Piani d'Erna, which is one of the most challenging in the Lake Como area. Another popular option is the Via Ferrata of Mount Medale – Medale Horn loop from Lecco, known for its steep rock faces. The Resegone mountain itself offers several via ferratas, including Ferrata Centenario and Ferrata Silvano de Franco.

Examples include the Monte Legnone Summit loop from Valvarrone, which takes you to the highest peak in the province, and the Rifugio Alpeggio Carlo Porta – Caminetto Pagani loop from Lecco.
The best time for mountaineering in Lecco is generally from late spring to early autumn (May to October). During these months, the weather is more stable, and trails are typically free of snow, especially at lower altitudes. Via ferratas are also best enjoyed in this period. Winter mountaineering is possible but requires specialized gear and experience due to snow, ice, and colder temperatures.
Parking is available at various starting points for mountaineering routes. For routes accessing Monte Resegone or the Grigne Massif, you can often find parking near Piani d'Erna (accessible by cable car from Lecco) or Piani dei Resinelli. Given the challenging nature of Lecco's mountaineering routes, essential gear includes sturdy hiking boots, appropriate layers of clothing, a helmet, and a headlamp. For via ferratas, a complete via ferrata set (harness, lanyard with energy absorber, and helmet) is mandatory. Depending on the route and season, ice axes and crampons might be necessary for higher altitudes or winter conditions. Always carry sufficient water, food, and navigation tools.
