If you ever imagined the surface of Mars, you certainly imagined it similar to this landscape. It's a great and beautiful area with laterite-containing soil.

The summit of the Peñas Blancas offers exciting views of the surrounding mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. Hikers are rewarded by silent nature all around, and the nearby Refugio can serve as a place to have a short break before the descent.

This is the E19 road climb, if you can call it a road! As stated by others, it’s in pretty bad condition. You have to be careful on the curves and stay to the right. There is not much traffic, but what there is, is often in the middle of the road. The road down/up to Pinilla is a bit of a rollercoaster and you have more than 80M of ascent/descent, but you are in the wilds with almond trees everywhere, beautiful in late January when they are in bloom.

The VV is ok, but the surface is in places rough. However it only leads to a northern suburb of Cartagena. I have tried several times to go further but have only run into big roads with heavy traffic. Murcia/Cartagena need to join the VV with the other bike routes nearer the centre (preferably traffic free.)
