At 3,718 meters, Mount Teide is the highest mountain in Spain. The ascent to the dormant volcano is short, but can be strenuous for those with little experience. From the summit, there are magnificent panoramic views of the Canary Islands. Be sure to book your Teide National Park access pass and cable car ticket in advance.

There are over 20 mountaineering routes documented around Arico on komoot, offering a wide range of experiences across the diverse volcanic landscapes of Tenerife.
Yes, Arico offers a few easier options. While many routes are moderate to difficult, there are at least two routes classified as easy. For a moderate, family-friendly option that still offers stunning views, consider the Teide National Park – Roque de García loop from Roque Cinchado, which is 2.9 miles (4.6 km) long and takes about 1 hour 35 minutes.
For experienced mountaineers seeking a challenge, the region offers several difficult routes. One notable option is the Huevos del Teide – View of Mount Teide loop from Montaña Blanca, a 10.1-mile (16.2 km) trail with significant elevation gain, typically taking over 7 hours to complete. Another demanding route is the Roque de García – Pico Viejo Crater loop from Roque Cinchado, which is 15.6 km long and features over 1000 meters of ascent.
While most general hiking trails in Teide National Park do not require a permit, access to the very summit of Mount Teide (from the top of the cable car) does require a special permit from the National Park authorities. For the routes listed around Arico, such as those exploring the base of Teide or the Cañadas, permits are generally not needed unless you plan to ascend to the peak itself. Always check the official Teide National Park website for the latest regulations.
The mountaineering routes around Arico are rich with unique geological formations. You can encounter iconic sights like Roque Cinchado, a distinctive rock pillar, and the impressive La Catedral formation. Other notable features include El Burro and Placas de Guillermo. Many routes also offer panoramic views of the Teide massif and even across to Gran Canaria.
Yes, many of the mountaineering routes around Arico are designed as loops, allowing you to start and end at the same point. Examples include the View of Gran Canaria – Degollada de Guajara loop from Roque Cinchado and the Cañada Blanca Visitor Center – Piedras Amarillas Rock Formations loop from Roque Cinchado, which is a moderate 12.2 km route.
The best time for mountaineering in Arico, particularly in the higher altitudes of Teide National Park, is generally from spring to autumn (April to October). During these months, the weather is typically stable, with clear skies and pleasant temperatures. Winter can bring snow and ice to higher elevations, making some routes more challenging or inaccessible, though lower-altitude trails may still be enjoyable.
During winter months (roughly November to March), the higher elevations around Arico, especially within Teide National Park, can experience snowfall and freezing temperatures. While this creates a unique landscape, it also means trails can become icy and require specialized equipment like crampons and ice axes. Always check local weather forecasts and trail conditions before heading out in winter.
Yes, for many of the popular mountaineering routes around Arico, particularly those within or near Teide National Park, designated parking areas are available. For instance, routes starting from Roque Cinchado or Montaña Blanca typically have nearby parking facilities, though these can fill up during peak times.
The mountaineering routes around Arico are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.8 stars. Reviewers often praise the stunning volcanic landscapes, the expansive panoramic views of Mount Teide and the surrounding islands, and the unique geological formations. The diversity of routes, from moderate loops to challenging ascents, is also frequently highlighted.
Given that many routes are within or close to Teide National Park, you'll find facilities primarily at visitor centers. The Cañada Blanca Visitor Center, for example, is a starting point for some routes and offers amenities. However, many trails traverse remote volcanic terrain, so it's always advisable to carry sufficient water and snacks, as cafes may not be directly on every route.
While large mammals are rare in this volcanic environment, you might spot various bird species, including the endemic Blue Chaffinch. Lizards and other small reptiles are also common. The unique flora, adapted to the volcanic soil, is a significant part of the natural experience, especially the Teide broom and Teide bugloss.
