Saint CECILIA, to whom this chapel was dedicated, is, among the great circle of saints, primarily responsible - if one can put it so casually at this point - for good sound, because she is the patron saint of church music. Many religious choirs are named after her. The patron saint's day, i.e. her memorial day in the calendar of saints, is on November 22nd.

The Benedictine abbey of Santa Maria de Montserrat [ˈsantə məˈɾi.a ðə munsəˈrat] is located at an altitude of 721 meters in the mountains of the same name, about 40 km northwest of Barcelona in the extreme south of the Bages region. Today, about 80 monks live there according to the Rule of Benedicti. In the monastery, the 12th century depiction of the Virgin Mary "Our Lady of Montserrat", popularly known as La Moreneta ("The Brown One"), is venerated by numerous pilgrims. As an important center of Catalan culture, Montserrat is of great symbolic importance beyond the Catholic Church. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kloster_Montserrat

There are over 80 touring cycling routes in Parc Natural de la Muntanya de Montserrat, offering a wide range of options for exploring the unique landscape.
While many routes in Montserrat are rated difficult due to significant elevation changes, there are some moderate options. Currently, there are 21 moderate touring cycling routes available, though no routes are specifically classified as easy. These moderate routes still offer a good challenge for those newer to touring cycling in mountainous terrain.
The region is rich in natural and cultural landmarks. You can cycle past the iconic Montserrat Monastery, enjoy panoramic views from Sant Jeroni Summit or Hermits' Viewpoint, and discover unique rock formations like Cap de Mort and Roca Foradada (Holed Rock). Several routes also pass by historic hermitages such as Sant Onofre Hermitage.
Yes, many touring cycling routes in the park are circular, allowing you to start and end at the same point. An excellent example is the Monasterio de Montserrat from Monistrol - circular through the Montserrat Natural Park, which offers a comprehensive loop through the natural beauty of the area.
Spring and autumn generally offer the most pleasant conditions for touring cycling in Montserrat, with milder temperatures and less intense sun. Summer can be very hot, especially at midday, while winter can bring cooler temperatures, though snow is rare at lower elevations. Always check the weather forecast before heading out.
Given the challenging terrain with significant elevation gains, most touring cycling routes in Montserrat are rated as difficult. While there are no routes specifically labeled 'easy,' families with older, experienced cyclists might find some of the shorter moderate routes manageable. It's advisable to review the route profiles carefully for elevation and distance before embarking with family.
While the natural park generally welcomes dogs, specific rules may apply to certain areas or trails. It's always best to keep your dog on a leash and ensure they are well-behaved and accustomed to cycling alongside you. Be mindful of other users and wildlife. There are no specific 'dog-friendly' touring cycling routes designated, so choose routes based on your dog's fitness and your ability to manage them safely.
The duration varies significantly depending on the route's length and elevation. For instance, the La Salut Hermitage of Collbató – View of Montserrat loop from Collbató is a challenging 33.5 km route that typically takes around 2 hours 45 minutes, while longer routes can extend to over 4 hours.
Parking is available at various access points around the Parc Natural de la Muntanya de Montserrat. Popular starting points like Monistrol de Montserrat or near Aeri de Montserrat (cable car station) often have designated parking areas. It's recommended to check specific parking options for your chosen starting point in advance, especially during peak season.
Yes, Montserrat is well-connected by public transport. You can reach Monistrol de Montserrat by train, which provides access to the rack railway or cable car up to the monastery, and also serves as a starting point for several cycling routes. This allows for flexible planning, combining cycling with public transport for a car-free experience.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.4 stars. Reviewers often praise the iconic rock formations, the challenging yet rewarding ascents, and the panoramic views of the Catalan countryside. The diverse terrain, from forested slopes to open fields, also contributes to a memorable cycling experience.
While the routes themselves traverse natural landscapes, you'll find cafes and restaurants in the towns and villages surrounding the park, such as Monistrol de Montserrat, Collbató, and at the Montserrat Monastery complex itself. It's always a good idea to plan your route to include these stops or carry sufficient provisions, especially on longer rides.
While the main routes to the monastery are popular, the extensive network of over 80 routes means there are many lesser-known paths. Exploring routes like Pont del Diable de Martorell – Montserrat Monastery Plaza loop from el Bruc, which starts from a different village, can offer a quieter experience while still providing stunning views and challenging terrain away from the most frequented areas.
