It's really good to be able to get information on-site here as well. It's a bit of a shame that practically every little thing here is described as a 100 highlight.

Experiencing a sunrise or sunset at Stonehenge is of course something very special and you should not miss it if you have the opportunity.

Can someone please be happy/laughing with me that Google Translate turns Amy's "henge and timber monument" into "Denkmal für Hühner 🐔" in German? - Great 😂😂😂

Take the small path just over the entrance road to Stonehenge, on the right This leads you right oast the stones and some lovely picture opportunities. It then goes over grass to a double gate beside the A303. You need to cross over the A303 to be able to ride safely up the hill on the pathway and then cross back over at the top to rejoin the gravel. Or simply cycle uo the grass verge as I did but this is a lot more sketchy. A fantastic ride and you are only 10 mins from the end.

It is not so common for a Christian place of worship – which encompasses the whole of heaven – to be dedicated to “ALL SAINTS”. Usually it is one (or occasionally two) named saints who hold the patronage of a church – and thus usually also of the parish or town in which it is located. But to find the origin of such a dedication, one has to go far back in history, because the model for this practice of dedication to ALL SAINTS can be seen as a pagan custom, according to which there were already central temples in pre-Christian times that were dedicated to all deities (PANTHEON). The probably most famous Pantheon, formerly a pagan temple and now a Christian place of worship, is located in the Italian capital.

Many trailheads and villages in the area offer parking options. For walks focusing on the prehistoric monuments, there is often parking near visitor centres like Stonehenge. For more local routes, such as those starting in villages like Enford or Netheravon itself, on-street parking is typically available, but be sure to park considerately. Always check local signage for any restrictions, especially near military training areas.
Yes, many trails in the Netheravon area are dog-friendly. The open spaces of Salisbury Plain and paths along the River Avon are great for walking with dogs. However, be aware that much of Salisbury Plain is an active military training area, so you must keep dogs on a lead and stick to marked public rights of way. Also, be mindful of livestock in fields and nesting birds, particularly in nature reserves like the Avon Valley Nature Reserve.
Absolutely. The region offers several shorter, flatter routes perfect for a family outing. For a gentle walk along the river, consider the Enford Church – River Avon in East Chisenbury loop from Enford. It's a pleasant trail that isn't too strenuous and showcases the lovely riverside scenery.
Salisbury Plain is the UK's largest military training area, but it has an extensive network of public rights of way (footpaths and byways) that are accessible for hiking. It's crucial to stick to these marked paths. Access to certain areas can be restricted during live firing exercises. Always obey warning signs, red flags, and bylaws. You can check for planned firing times on the government's website to help plan your walk safely.
Accessing the trailheads directly via public transport can be challenging due to the rural nature of the area. Bus services connect larger towns like Salisbury and Amesbury, from which you might be able to walk or take a taxi to a starting point. Planning your route from a town with a bus stop is the most effective strategy if relying on public transport.
Yes, circular walks are very common around Netheravon. Many routes are designed as loops to bring you back to your starting point. A great example that combines historical interest with scenic views is the Stonehenge – New King Barrows loop from Larkhill, which takes you through a landscape rich with ancient burial mounds.
The area is at the heart of the Stonehenge and Avebury World Heritage Site. Besides Stonehenge itself, you can hike to other significant prehistoric sites like Woodhenge, a Neolithic timber circle monument, and the numerous Bronze Age burial mounds (barrows) that dot the landscape. The historic Netheravon Airfield, one of the oldest military airfields, is another point of interest on local walks.
Several villages in the area have traditional pubs that make for a perfect stop during or after a hike. While not directly on every trail, villages like Netheravon and Enford have pubs that are often just a short detour from a main walking path. It's always a good idea to check their opening times in advance, especially on weekdays.
The trails around Netheravon are highly regarded by the komoot community. Hikers frequently praise the unique feeling of open space and the 'big skies' of Salisbury Plain. The combination of stunning natural landscapes, from the chalk downlands to the tranquil River Avon, and the ability to walk through thousands of years of history is a major highlight.
There is a wide variety of trails to explore, with over 100 routes mapped on komoot around Netheravon. These range from short, easy strolls under an hour to more challenging all-day hikes, offering plenty of options for all fitness levels.
The hiking landscape is dominated by two main features. You'll find vast, open, and rolling chalk grasslands on Salisbury Plain, which offer expansive views. In contrast, the paths that follow the River Avon provide a more gentle and enclosed experience, with lush riverbanks and water meadows.
