Golden Gate Bridge

Highlight (Segment) • Bridge

When you think of the iconic features of San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge is one of the first things that comes to mind. This impressive suspension bridge links the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula to Marin County, with fantastic views of the city, marina and Crissy Field. It’ is one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco, California, and the United States, putting it at the top of many cyclist's bucket lists.

While crossing, you can gaze up at the towering beams above or look down into the deep waters of the San Francisco Strait below you as sailboats drift by in the mouth of the Bay. Traveling along the Bridge can be cold, windy, and foggy, even in the summer, so dress appropriately.

At the south end, you can purchase a souvenir at the Golden Gate Bridge Pavilion and visit the café next to the visitor center. Restrooms are at both the north and south ends, and cyclists have toll-free access to the Bridge's sidewalks 24 hours a day. A bike ride across this extraordinary Bridge is an adventure you don't want to miss!

Sausalito Path

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

The Sausalito Bike Path runs through Mill Valley. It's a paved route with great views of the wetlands on the old Northwest-Pacific rail line, which operated from 1884 until its closure in 1971. The path ends near Mike’s Bikes in Marin City, where riders can continue along the busy Bridgeway into Sausalito or take quieter marina backroads.

One of my favorite views of the Golden Gate Bridge, particularly in the evening with red of the bridge glowing in the sun, and the city skyline shimmering through the bridge cables. The trail passes the battery that was part of the 19th- and early 20th-century Fort Baker defenses on the north side of the Golden Gate, the entrance to San Francisco Bay, long before the bridge was built. On the opposite side similar batteries are embedded in the Presidio bluffs above Fort Point.

Sausalito Waterfront

Highlight • Viewpoint

Ferry Terminal in Sausalito, a San Francisco Bay Area city in Marin County, California. Sausalito is 8 miles (13 km) south-southeast of San Rafael just north of the Golden Gate. The population was 7,061 as of the 2010 census. Prior to the building of the Golden Gate Bridge the community served as a terminus for rail, car, and ferry traffic. Developed rapidly as a shipbuilding center in World War II, the city's industrial character gave way in postwar years to a reputation as a wealthy and artistic enclave, a picturesque residential community (incorporating large numbers of houseboats), and a tourist destination. It is adjacent to, and largely bounded by, the protected spaces of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sausalito,_California

Fern Creek Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Despite its name, this trail runs along Redwood Creek; it joins the Redwood Creek Trail to the south. This walk is easy and popular, so if you want to avoid the crowds, you'll need to come early.

Cathedral Grove is located within Muir Woods National Monument in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. This amazing grove is home to the tallest and oldest redwoods in the area! This peaceful area encourages quiet contemplation as visitors walk through it on a gentle loop trail. The coast redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) in Cathedral Grove can reach heights of 380 feet, making them the tallest living things on Earth. Despite their massive size, redwoods have shallow roots, extending only 10 to 13 feet deep, but they spread out 60 to 80 feet and interlace with the roots of neighboring trees. This interconnected root system provides the strength needed to withstand strong coastal winds.

Opening this bike tunnel through the renovated trail tunnel as part of the 2010 redeveloped rail connection from Larkspur Ferry to Santa Rosa closed a crucial gap in the bike commute to San Francisco.

Mount Tamalpais — East Peak

The Angel Island Ferry Landing in Ayala Cove offers regular passenger ferry service to Tiburon and San Francisco. The Angel Island to Tiburon Ferry provides a 15-minute crossing of the Racoon Strait to the Tiburon Ferry Terminal. The island is car-free, providing safe trails to hikers and bikers. Unlike the Tiburon and Sausalito ferry piers, private boats can moor at Ayala Cove Pier under Angel Island State Park's rules. Late in the day, lines can grow long, and on busy dates, visitors may be left waiting at the pier when the ferry reaches capacity.

Perhaps the best scenic overlook spot across the Golden Gate Bridge below Battery Spencer. It's at the end of a gravel trail that leads around the former military outlook that commands sweeping unimpeded views of the bridge and the opening of San Francisco Bay into the Pacific Ocean.
