Crivitz is located in the area of the so-called Pomeranian main ice marginal position. This means that the huge Scandinavian glacier came to a standstill here for a longer period. Like a giant conveyor belt, the ice pushed gravel, sand, and clay in front of it, piling it up to form the Crivitzer Höhen.

In connection with the expansion of the Raben Steinfelder Oberdorf into a princely summer residence, Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II commissioned the construction of twelve residential buildings along the Leezener Landstraße in 1863 for the families of the stud keepers involved in the Grand Ducal horse breeding operation. The Grand Duke commissioned his trusted court architect H. Willebrand to design these houses, whose neo-Gothic formal language is strongly reminiscent of the English country house style of the early 19th century. This impression is further reinforced by the predominantly English use of brick and the exposed brickwork in decorative patterns of yellow and red bricks. Stepped gables and decoratively designed chimneys and chimney pots complete the impression of English country cottages – all in all, a sensational, unique architectural ensemble for Mecklenburg.
