In the Middle Ages, the former castle was the regional administrative center of the Bishopric of Würzburg and also a border fortress to the areas of the Bishopric of Fulda. For a long time it was assumed that the castle was no longer used after it was destroyed in the 13th century. Archaeological investigations have meanwhile revealed construction phases that can be dated to the 16th century. The subsequent decay caused the complex to fall into oblivion. It was not until 1897 that forest master Fuchs discovered the remains of the wall while laying out a wood removal path and had them uncovered.

Quaint restaurant with very good, regional food! Game dishes from our own hunt - excellent!

In the 16th century, an iron smelter was built on the Holzberg by the von Thüngen noble family. In 1954, the hunting lodge was bought by the current owners, the Meinschäfer family, and converted into a restaurant with guest rooms. In the cozy dining room, modeled on a knight's hall, you can still sit romantically in the light of petroleum lamps.

Beautiful castle in the middle of the forest - if you don't know, you won't find it. But highly recommended to hike here.
