Westland Junction serves as the pivotal point linking the main Montour Trail with the Westland Branch Montour Trail. Named after the Westland Mine 1, which held significance as a Montour RR servicing point until the early 1980s. Following abandonment, the branch was revitalized by the W&LE in 2012 to cater to the gas plant.

The Montour Trail was formerly the Montour Railroad and is a very family friendly trail. The trail is mostly smooth crushed limestone, with some sections of asphalt. The entire trail is approximately 47 miles, with multiple branch routes increasing this to approximately 60 miles. This is a multi-user trail, so please be respectful of other trail users.

Yes, the region is well-suited for families and casual walkers. Most of the trails are rated as easy. A great option is the Warm-up Loop Trail — South Park, Bethel Park, which is a relatively short and flat walk through the park, making it ideal for an outing with children.
Many of the parks and trails in the area are dog-friendly, but it's always best to keep them on a leash unless you are in a designated off-leash area. Nearby Frick Park is a popular favorite with local dog owners as it features specific off-leash play spots alongside its hiking trails.
The hiking is generally characterized by rolling hills and well-maintained paths through woodlands. You'll encounter a mix of paved sections, particularly on multi-use paths like the Montour Trail, and natural surface trails within parks like South Park. The elevation changes are typically gentle to moderate.
While most routes are easy, there are options for a more strenuous hike. For a longer day out, consider the South Park loop via Maple Spring Loop & The Drain Trail. At over 9 miles, it combines several trails for a comprehensive exploration of the park and presents a moderate challenge.
Yes, you can connect to the Montour Trail from the area. The South Park/Montour Connector Trail loop provides a direct link, allowing you to enjoy both the park's paths and the well-known multi-use trail in one outing.
The main hub for hiking is South Park, which contains a large network of the area's trails. For a different experience, many locals also enjoy:
Hiking is possible year-round, but spring and autumn are particularly beautiful. Spring offers blooming wildflowers and pleasant temperatures, while autumn provides stunning fall foliage. Summer can be hot and humid, so plan for early morning hikes. Winter hiking can be enjoyable, but be prepared for icy or muddy conditions on the trails.
Yes, major parks like South Park and Schenley Park have dedicated parking lots, often near popular trailheads or picnic areas. For trails that start in more suburban areas, you may need to find on-street parking. It's always a good idea to arrive earlier on weekends, as the main lots can fill up.
The immediate area around Pleasant Hills is not known for significant waterfalls. The hikes here focus more on woodland scenery and rolling hills. You may encounter small cascades and streams, especially after rainfall, but for prominent waterfalls, you would likely need to travel further afield.
The parks and wooded corridors are home to common Eastern US wildlife. You can expect to see white-tailed deer, squirrels, chipmunks, and a variety of bird species, making it a good area for bird watching. While black bears exist in Pennsylvania, encounters in these suburban parks are very rare.
The area offers a good mix of both circular loops and point-to-point trails. Many of the routes within South Park are designed as loops, allowing you to start and end in the same place. The Montour Trail, being a rail-trail, is a point-to-point path, so you can walk as far as you like before turning back.
