People's Square, Funchal

Highlight • Rest Area

The harbor promenade of Funchal is very nice and clean. Unfortunately overrun by tourists in every season. In the shops and bars and cafes is Portuguese, English and sometimes German spoken, the prices are sometimes a bit overpriced. Funchal has a very nice old town. The narrow streets invite for a walk. Bus and taxi connections are available along the entire harbor promenade.

Spectacular views of the large mountains of the Massif Central of Madeira. The viewing platform is located more than 100 meters above the valley floor, where the mass of water, which is constantly flowing from the mountains, drives a power plant.

There's always something going on here at the harbor. Especially when the cruise ships are docked and the crowds flock to the city. First, most people storm the CR7 Museum, which is right on the pier where these huge ships are docked.

The hike from the car park along the Levada is very easy. The path is wide and mostly paved. It is less than 3 km there and back. It is easy for seniors and small children, and even if you don't have hiking boots with you. The view from the lookout point has a great view - assuming the weather is good. The little finches and other birds are already present on the path; up at the lookout point they sit in the tree, on the ground and on the round stone table. When we were there, there were enough seeds on the table to feed them. We simply took some and held our hand under the tree and they flew over and ate from our hands. At the kiosk downstairs you could also buy small bags of grain feed. There is also a toilet at the kiosk.

There is also a replica of Christopher Columbus's Santa Maria and some catamarans that go out for dolphin and whale watching (mostly short-finned pilot whales). For a catamaran tour lasting around 3 hours you pay p. p. 40€. The actual time for observation is relatively short (for us only about 10 minutes). In my opinion it's actually not worth it. A small consolation: If no whales or dolphins are spotted, you will receive a voucher for a further trip.
