On September 28, 1939, a reserve unit of the 14th Infantry Division of the Poznań Army was disarmed here by the Bolshevik Russian army, with the help of local Jews. Approximately 40 officers and cadets were taken prisoner and murdered by the Soviet NKVD in Katyn in April and May 1940. Among the thousand names on the "Katyn list" are those directly linked to Tarnogród, including Major Kazimierz Kraczkiewicz – one of the pioneers of Polish balloon aviation – as well as Second Lieutenant Edmund Seroka, Lieutenant Arkadiusz Koźmiński, and Senior Constable Feliks Radomski.

The first mention of the existence of a Uniate church in Majdan dates back to 1714; the church described at that time was a branch of the church in Księżpol. As a result of the liquidation of the Uniate diocese of Chełm, the church was converted into an Orthodox church. In 1906, a new church was built in the Byzantine-Russian style on the site of the older church. In 1919, the building was reclaimed for the benefit of the Roman Catholic Church, and the first Latin parish in the history of the village was established at that time.
