The 23.3 m high Wartturm on the Höxberg was part of the medieval city fortifications and defensive structures and today serves as an observation tower. The ascent via the new metal spiral staircase is rewarded with a fantastic 360° panorama. Observe opening hours. https://www.beckum.de/news/januar-bis-maerz-2026/soestwarte-wieder-geoeffnet/

Unfortunately you still can't get to the tower and there is no information on the door. It's probably just not being opened anymore. What a pity 🤷🏻♀️

The Plum Alley leads south of Beckum and is a respectable length of several kilometers. There are enough benches distributed along the route for an appropriate break.

The windmill on the Höxberg was built in 1853 by Hermann Niehaus. He took advantage of the exposed location on the southern slope of the Höxberg with its southwestern orientation. The construction was carried out by the Beckum mill builder Anton Rittmeier, who lived at Weststrasse 29. After 63 years, the pure wind milling operation ended. In 1916 a suction gas engine was installed in a small, self-contained building on the north side of the mill, powered by locally produced anthracite gas. The mechanical energy was conducted underground into the mill building via a transmission shaft. This measure made it possible to operate the mill independently of the wind. The mill is still owned by the family today and was operated by Hermann Nettebrock, the last active miller on the Höxberg, until September 16, 1956. In 1982 the windmill was placed under monument protection.
