A nature reserve of 540 hectares, located along the upper reaches of the Grote Nete in the municipality of Balen. What is special about this area is the combination of two completely different natural cores that seamlessly connect to each other. The Most is an extremely wet valley area, while the higher Keiheuvel is characterized by dry open land dunes. You will find the dunes everywhere in Keiheuvel, but the most beautiful part is behind the Airport. European top nature in Most-Keiheuvel that everyone can enjoy while walking, cycling, on horseback and even in a wheelchair.

The Topmolen is a small watermill consisting of a metal wheel with wooden rims and iron blades. The structure was built in 1850 by Carolus Vanderwegen. Together with his sons, he dug a 900-metre-long stream over the Asheide, achieving a drop of three metres. This meant that they could build a mill of the overshot type. In this case, the water was led above the small wheel, which turned forwards. The topmolen is the only mill of the overshot type in the province of Antwerp. The brick mill building is accompanied on the left by a lower house. In earlier times, a shop and inn were kept here. In 1925, the property was sold publicly to Edmond Hens. He made several improvements, such as electric lighting and the installation of an iron axle and a driving wheel. In 1935, the mill and the mill house were completely rebuilt in stone. Edmond Hens kept the mill in daily operation until 1958. It was then purchased by farmer and cattle dealer Alfons Geypen, who already owned the meadows around the mill. From that year on, the mill was inactive and in 1971 it was shut down for economic reasons. In the early 1990s, it was partly restored and made operational again, after which it was given the status of protected monument in 1993. From then on, however, the mill fell into serious disrepair again. The new owners, Tom Willems and Nele Leppens, started restoration work in 2007. Three years later, they sold the mill to the current owners, Hans Emmelkamp and Sara Belmans. They also wanted to continue the repairs and submitted a subsidy application for a functioning restoration. They also bought a three-century-old Kempen barn from Ham. They reconstructed this on the grounds of the Topmolen. Because it is a listed building, the subsidy application is currently still ongoing. After the restoration works, the owners want to run the watermill for the public once a month. At the same time, you could take a look in the barn, where part of the miller's arsenal can be exhibited. SOURCE: Erfgoed Balen
