One of the many marked hiking trails in the dunes. Early mornings in spring and autumn offer the best chance of seeing squirrels.

A popular starting point is the Ainsdale Discovery Centre, which offers parking and other visitor facilities. This provides convenient access to several waymarked trails leading into the dunes and woodlands.
Yes, dogs are generally welcome in the reserve and the adjacent Ainsdale Pine Woods. However, to protect the sensitive wildlife, including ground-nesting birds and rare natterjack toads, it's important to keep your dog under close control, especially during the breeding season from April to August. Some areas may have specific restrictions, so always look out for local signage.
The reserve is a hotspot for unique wildlife. Keep an eye out for the rare natterjack toad, sand lizards, and great-crested newts, particularly in the dune slacks. The pine woodlands are a crucial habitat for red squirrels. The area is also excellent for birdwatching, with various species found around the coastal habitats and lakes.
Yes, the area has several circular routes. The waymarked 'Velvet Trail' is a well-known circular path that takes you through the dunes and along the 'Green Beach'. For a longer, more varied loop that offers views of the nearby airfield, consider the RAF Woodvale Airfield View – Bench at Pinfold Path Pond loop from Freshfield.
The trails vary to suit different abilities. You can find short, easy walks of around 3 to 5 kilometers that take about an hour, as well as more moderate hikes that can extend over 10 kilometers and take several hours. The network of waymarked footpaths allows you to easily shorten or extend your walk.
Yes, some paths are designed for accessibility. The Woodland Path and Fisherman's Path are generally suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Additionally, the Sands Lake Trail features a boardwalk that offers an accessible way to experience the area's coastal flora and fauna.
The Ainsdale Sand Dunes National Nature Reserve (NNR) is a large, nationally important area managed by Natural England for its significant wildlife and habitats. The adjacent Ainsdale and Birkdale Sandhills Local Nature Reserve (LNR) is managed by Sefton Council for both wildlife and public enjoyment.
