One of best places to view the Hot Creek Geological Site. Get a slightly elevated view looking down on the creek and steaming pools. Continue back down the road for a slightly shorter hike or you can turn around and return the way you came up.

Convict Lake is a glacial lake and is surrounded by majestic mountains. The picturesque lake, however, has a very sad history. It gets its name from an incident that happened in 1871, when 29 convicts escaped from Carson City Jail and found a place to hide near the lake. After killing a mail carrier who had found them by chance at Convict Lake, they were followed by military officers and there was a bloody shoot-out. The surviving prisoners were found soon after and lynched.

All along the valley steam rises up from the creek, particularly impressive in the cool early morning, combined with the warm light of the low sun

From a volcanic cleft, boiling hot water escapes into a pool, which evaporates turquoise blue. From the upper vantage point you can see it best.

As Mammoth Creek leaves the Sierra and flows east into the Long Valley Caldera it is joined by warmer water from geothermal springs at the Hot Creek State Fish Hatchery. From this confluence the stream is named Hot Creek, though its water temperature seldom exceeds 68 °F (20 °C) until it reaches Hot Creek Gorge, 8 miles (13 km) east of Mammoth Lakes. In the Hot Creek Gorge, numerous hot springs near and in the stream bed add hot water into the stream. It was closed to bathing in 2006 due to volcanic activity causing dangerous boiling water. Its mouth is at the confluence with the Owens River upstream from Crowley Lake. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_Creek_(Mono_County,_California) To find one of the wild hot springs pools open to bathing https://www.komoot.com/tour/15518259
