November 19, 2025, Discovery Trail

The Discovery Trail is the longer of the two trails through the Purple Woods and it travels through woodlands and open meadows. If you're here in the lead up to the annual Purple Woods Maple Syrup Festival that takes place each March, you may see trees being tapped for sap collection.

Purple Woods Conservation Area offers year-round hiking with sweeping southern views and connections to the Oak Ridges Trail. Visitors can enjoy short, accessible routes like the Sugar Shack and Discovery Walk trails, while spotting migratory songbirds in spring and fall, Monarch butterflies in summer, and vibrant foliage in autumn. Each March, the 41-acre site transforms into the hub of the Purple Woods Maple Syrup Festival, celebrating the area’s 150-year-old sugar maple forest. November 13, 2025, Bowmanville Creek

Bowmanville Creek flows south from the Oak Ridges Moraine through forests, wetlands, and farmland before reaching Lake Ontario at Bowmanville Harbour. Its coldwater stream is known for seasonal runs of Chinook salmon and rainbow trout, with fish ladders and restoration sites supporting migration and spawning. The creek passes through several conservation areas, including Enniskillen and Long Sault, with trails and boardwalks that run along its course, providing plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife along the water.

Enniskillen Conservation Area is a beautiful, wooded area with a quiet network of forested trails that are a mix of boardwalks and shaded paths through cedar swamp and tall mixed hardwoods. The 5.5-kilometre trail system loops past two ponds and follows stretches of Bowmanville Creek, with interpretive signs and glimpses of the old Moorey Grist Mill site. It’s a peaceful spot with picnic shelters, restrooms, and a lovely pollinator garden near the main entrance.

The 'Durham Regional Forest' is located on the Oak Ridges moraine near the community of Uxbridge, north of Pickering. Uxbridge calls itself the hiking capital of Canada. The forest has a total area of almost 600 hectares; around 65 km of hiking and cycling trails have been created and connected to the 'Trans Canada Trail'. The area was reforested with coniferous forests from the 1920s onwards in order to reduce soil erosion and increase regional forest cover. Since then, the forest has been managed to restore the natural forest cover. This has resulted in a mixed forest with predominantly maple and beech trees. https://discoveruxbridge.ca/trails/durham-forest/

This section is part of a single/double black mtb trail so you'll need both a mountain bike (no gravel or hybrid) and requisite skill to clear it
