South Mountain is so close to the city, from most trails you have great views of the city.

The Pima Canyon Trailhead is one of the most popular trailheads for the South Mountain Preserve. There are a bunch of different trails that start/finish in the parking lot (including the National Trail), and there are a bunch of different loop and route options starting from here. There are restrooms, trail maps, and adequate parking at this trailhead.

A remarkable leftover building from the depression era of the 1930's, where Civilian Conservation Corps and some 4000 men built over 40 miles of hiking trails. They made sure to build with enviornmentally compatible masonary stone. Appreciate the carftsmanship left behind.

The Pima Canyon Trailhead is one of the busier areas of the South Mountain Preserve. There are a number of trails that start here and head in all directions and there's something for all skill levels as well. With restrooms, water, and posted trail maps you'll have whatever you need to get your ride started right.

Piestewa Peak is the second highest peak in the Phoenix Mountains at 2,600 feet. A climb at sunset is worthwhile, because you get a great view of the illuminated city of Phoenix and the surrounding landscape. For the ascent you should take at least one hour, because over 1.2 miles about 1,100 feet of altitude must be climbed over a very rocky path. The parking lot is still well filled at this time of day.

October 7, 2023, Piestewa Peak

At 2,608 feet, Piestewa Peak is the second highest peak in the Phoenix Mountains Preserve. The trail up to the summit is steep, rocky, and entirely exposed to the elements, but it's also one of the most popular trails in all of Phoenix. You get completely unobstructed views of the city and surrounding mountains from this high point.
