January 16, 2024, Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks Viewpoint

At the end of the Slot Canyon Trail is a nice overlook of the Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks. Here, runners can look down on the rock formations made 6 to 7 million years ago. Historically, there were massive volcanic eruptions that left pumice, ash, and tuff deposits over 1,000 feet thick. The Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks are the remnants of that volcanic activity that can be seen and studied today.

Ponderosa Group Campground has vault toilets and water spigots and is just off of New Mexico Highway 4. The campsites can hold 10–50 people, and there is access to the Frijoles Canyon Shuttle running from mid-May to mid-October. This campground was affected by the Las Conchas Fire back in 2011, and today it is repaired and running well.

Upper Frijoles Crossing is where the Ponderosa, Frijoles Rim, Frijoles, and Apache Springs Trails all intersect. This spot also has fantastic views down the lush canyon and is a great place to pause and take some photos and sip some water because it can get hot out there!

The Tyuonyi Overlook Trail is 2.2 miles in total and goes from Juniper Campground to Tyuonyi Overlook. The trail highlights are the couple of Frijoles Canyon Overlooks and Tyuonyi Overlook. Different seasons can have different conditions; in the dry season, the trail is susceptible to dust, and the wet season can make the trail muddy.

Tyuonyi Overlook is a viewpoint from the turnaround point on the Tyuonyi Overlook Trail that looks down on the Pueblo Dwellings in the valley below. Be careful at the viewpoint, as it has no guard rails and is a steep drop-off.

January 4, 2024, Cave Loop Trail

Cave Loop Trail brings hikers through Kasha-Katuwe Monument’s unique tent-shaped hoodoo rock formations and past caves in the rock walls as well. Some of the rock formations are fragile, so it is important to stay on the trail and not touch any rock formations.
