Easy hikes and walks around Kobarid

From the ticket booth, a narrow path leads into the narrow, deeply cut gorge of the Kozjak stream. Wooden walkways, stairs, and a small suspension bridge lead along moss-covered rock faces deeper and deeper – the walls close in, it becomes cool, damp, and shady, until at the end the impressive Kozjak waterfall is revealed in a semi-enclosed rock chamber. The last section is among the most photogenic spots in the Soča Valley: the waterfall plunges about 15 m into an emerald-green basin, which it has washed out of the limestone over millennia. 🥾 Narrow, rocky paths with walkways and steps – slippery when wet, sure-footedness required 🚶 In high season and on weekends, it gets crowded up to the waterfall – arriving early is worthwhile 🧥 It is significantly cooler in the gorge than outside – wear an extra layer 📸 The green basin looks best in diffuse light; direct sun is scarce here 🎟️ Entrance to Kozjak (as of 09/2026: €5 p.p.); access only via the signposted path

Shortly before the large Slap Kozjak lies its little brother, Mali Kozjak. The Kozjak stream plunges here in several low steps over mossy rocks before forming the well-known main waterfall further down. The cascade can be seen well from the developed footbridge – a pretty foretaste that most visitors pass by on their way to the large fall. Considerably daintier and less spectacular, but an atmospheric motif in the shady, damp green of the gorge. 📸 Beautiful detail motif – with longer exposure, the water becomes soft and silky 🌿 Damp, mossy surroundings – the rocks and footbridges are often slippery here 🚶 Located directly on the path to the large Slap Kozjak, no detour necessary 👀 Easy to overlook – pay attention to the stream on the left/right shortly before the main waterfall 🎟️ Already located in the paid section (admission to Kozjak, as of 09/2026: €5 p.p.)

🌊 Soča rapids Between the suspension bridge and the Napoleon bridge, the Soča changes its character several times: calm, deep green pools give way to short rapids where the water foams white between limestone blocks. The section is part of the classic Trnovo–Kobarid whitewater course, which is very popular with kayakers and rafting boats. The play of currents and colours can be observed well from the bank path – it becomes lively especially where the river narrows before the gorge near Kobarid. 🛶 On warm days, boats pass by almost every minute – a good opportunity to watch 🪨 The blocks on the bank are smooth and algae-covered – do not step on wet rocks 🏊 Do not swim in the rapids; choose calm spots further downstream or upstream 📸 With a short exposure time, you freeze the spray; with a long one, you achieve the soft "milk effect" 🌧️ After rain, the water level rises quickly and the rapids become significantly stronger

🌉 Suspension bridge over the Soča (Brv čez Sočo) About a kilometer upstream from the Napoleon Bridge, a narrow suspension bridge spans the Soča, connecting the slope below Tonocov grad with the east bank and the path to Slap Kozjak. It is part of the Kobariška zgodovinska pot and is the point where you first really hear the roar of the river after descending through the forest. From the middle of the bridge, you look far up and down the emerald-green river – one of the most beautiful views of the Soča near Kobarid. 📸 Photo spot: photograph from the middle upstream, then gravel banks and mountains are in the picture 🚶 The bridge sways noticeably and is narrow – wait for oncoming hikers in high season 🐕 Dogs that are not afraid of the grid floor walk without problems, otherwise carry them 🥾 From here it is a good 20 minutes on a well-developed path to the ticket booth at Kozjak 🏕️ Right on the east bank is Kamp Lazar with a restaurant – an opportunity to stop before or after the waterfall

🌉 Napoleon Bridge (Napoleonov most) The stone arch bridge spans the narrow gorge of the Soča on the outskirts of Kobarid and is one of the town's landmarks. The first stone arch was built in 1750; the bridge got its name because Napoleon's troops crossed it in 1797 on their way to Austria. At the beginning of World War I, in 1915, it was blown up by the retreating Austro-Hungarian army and rebuilt by the Italians. Today it is part of the Kobariška zgodovinska pot and marks the transition from the town to the hiking and kayaking world of the upper Soča. 📸 Best view from the bridge itself down into the gorge – the water glows particularly intensely here 🏊 Below the bridge there are popular swimming spots; entry via the path on the east bank 🛶 Entry point for kayak and rafting tours – correspondingly busy on warm days 🅿️ Small parking lot directly at the bridge, access via the road towards Drežnica 🥾 From here it is only a few minutes to the center of Kobarid

🏞️ Banks of the Soča near Kobarid Between the suspension bridge below Tonocov grad and the Napoleon bridge, the path runs directly along the river. The Soča shows its typical emerald green here – the colour is created by the clear limestone water and fine rock particles that refract the light. Quiet sections with gravel banks alternate with narrow constrictions where the water rushes audibly. The bank path is wide, shady and part of the Kobariška zgodovinska pot; those who look carefully will still find remnants of old WWI dugouts on the embankment. 🪨 Gravel banks invite a break – the water is cold even in summer (mostly below 12 °C) 🏊 Swimming is possible in shallow areas, but beware: currents and kayak/rafting traffic 🌉 The suspension bridge (Brv čez Sočo) is a popular photo spot, but it sways noticeably 📸 Best colour in sunshine and low water levels; after rain, the river becomes milky-cloudy 🥾 Path well-developed, hardly any gradient – also suitable for the less experienced

The three-nave church on the main square stands on the site of a predecessor building from the 12th century; Kobarid itself is first mentioned in 1015. A town fire destroyed the church and 30 houses in 1683, only the choir was preserved. The current nave with the massive pillars was built in 1824–32, next to it the free-standing bell tower. Inside, the baroque marble altar from 1716 from Görz, behind it a statue of Mary by a Carinthian master from around 1470, which is usually hidden by an Assumption painting. The organ from 1876 comes from the well-known Slovenian organ builder Franc Goršič. ▫️ Sunday mass at 9:30 am, weekdays in the evening – often closed outside of services, but a look through the grate is still worthwhile ▫️ Patron saint's day on August 15th, called "Rožnica" in the village, with a church consecration festival ▫️ The tower is the best landmark in the village and is visible from afar on the road to Idrsko
