Below the cliffs of Cap Fréhel, near Port au Suet, lies a small, unspoiled and beautiful stretch of coastline that transforms into an impressive beach at low tide. When the sea recedes, the Atlantic precursor of the Breton coast reveals wide sandy and rocky areas. Between the granite and sandstone formations shaped by the water, a tranquil bay is created, framed by the high cliffs of the Cap.

Just a few steps from today's lighthouse, the stocky granite structure with its small openings and defensive shape is reminiscent of the era of early coastal surveillance. The historic round tower was built in the early 18th century under the influence of the fortress master builder Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban and served as an observation and signal tower for coastal control as well as an early beacon for shipping.

On the occasion of such a gun emplacement, which once secured the coast here, the following sentence from the French writer Victor Hugo (1802 to 1885) comes to mind: "One day, cannons will be exhibited in museums, like old torture instruments are now, and people will be amazed that such things could ever have been used." If only this vision of his had already become a reality! Then there would be no need for the many 'Monument aux Morts' with which villages and towns, far and wide, commemorate their inhabitants who lost their lives in war.

I would like to pass on a thought from the well-known French writer Victor-Marie Vicomte HUGO (1802–1885, whose probably best-known novel „The Hunchback of Notre Dame“ will be familiar to many at least in the film version), who expressed himself on hiking as follows: „Nothing, in my opinion, is as charming as this way of traveling: namely, on foot! You belong entirely to yourself, you are free, you are happy… completely connected with the tree under which you seek shelter, completely connected with the church in which you collect yourself. You take leave, you stop, you return. Nothing hinders us, nothing holds us back, you wander and dream as you go.“

In brilliant sunshine, Cap Fréhel shows itself from its most impressive side. The mighty cliffs glow in the warm light, while the lighthouse majestically rises above the vast heathland. Deep below the rocks, the clear, turquoise sea shimmers, forming a unique natural spectacle with the dark granite formations and the colorful heath areas. The wide view over the coast, the play of light and water, and the rugged beauty of the landscape make this place an unforgettable experience.

During the German occupation in World War II, Cap Fréhel was developed into a militarily important location. Various facilities such as bunkers, observation posts, gun emplacements, radar installations, and accommodations for the stationed units were built to monitor and defend the coastal section.
