In 1904, a footbridge, known as the Karlsteg, was built to connect the train station and the district poorhouse. The footbridge was replaced in 1927 by a concrete bridge designed by architect Anton Potyka, which was built by the state (federal government) and initially called the Chancellor's Bridge. After the annexation of Austria to Hitler's Germany, the bridge was named after SS man Erich Schredt (1908–1934), who was killed in the July Putsch. After the liberation of Austria, the bridge was named after Karl Renner in 1945, who was under house arrest in the Renner Villa in Gloggnitz during the Nazi era. The bridge was renovated in 1995. Of interest are the non-functional bridge piers, which are geometrically cast from concrete and stand above the actual piers on both sides of the bridge.
