The term Marterl or Marter is often used as a generalization for wayside shrines and other field monuments. The Austrian/South German name is derived from the word martyr/martyr (ancient Greek μάρτυς mártys “witness”, “blood witness”).

Monument with seating for the Ergoldsbacher Heimatlied, composed by Josef Kropf in 1927, the music is by Karl Hofmeister. It is said: In the green valley, by the stream, lies dear Ergoldsbach, my hometown. Where my mother cradled me, you are a haven of peace for my children. Where parental love kissed me, greetings to my Ergoldsbach! I am connected to you throughout life, with joy and sorrow. Oh, greetings, many thousands of times, my Ergoldsbach in the green valley! A dear people lives in you, your civic industriousness stirs vigorously, Where faithful loving love reigns and moves all hearts joyfully. Ergoldsbachers also do not forget their noble duty to their fatherland, They stand loyally with their hearts and hands for their dear, dear fatherland. Oh, greetings, many thousands of times, my Ergoldsbach in the green valley! Your church tower greets you in the distance, your chapel stands on the mountain, Prayers who piously ask for Mary's protection like to stay there. Even if your little stream does not carry any gold, even without this I am kind to you, I love the greenery of your seeds, the flowers that bloom along the way. Oh, greetings, many thousands of times, my Ergoldsbach in the green valley! Chimneys reach into the sky, roof tiles are burned from "earth gold", Taking the trains abroad, they are known as “Ergoldsbacher”, By the dark red and bright sound, their call reached far away, Known throughout the German fatherland for the fame of Ergoldsbach. Oh, greetings, many thousands of times, my Ergoldsbach in the green valley! If Grim Reaper wants me one day and calls me away from home, Let me be buried quietly on the hill, because my parents rest there too. Dear Ergoldsbach, I think of you when I fall asleep in peace, My breaking eyes close wearily, then greetings for the last time! Oh, greetings, many thousands of times, my Ergoldsbach in the green valley!

In 1889 a Way of the Cross to the chapel on Kapellenberg with fourteen stations was built as a staircase from the town center. For this purpose, stone columns with colored depictions made of cast zinc were erected. In 2004, the Ergoldsbach Women's Association added a fifteenth station, “Jesus Rises from the Dead”.

In 1825 there was already a newly built chapel on the Kapellenberg. This was dismantled in 1895 and moved to Kläham. This has now been demolished - only a bell from the Ergoldsbach period remains. In the same year, the then Ergoldsbach pastor Igl had the new mountain chapel built on the northern outer wall of the rampart fortress. It was completed in 1896 and is dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes. Therefore, today it is usually referred to as the Lourdes Chapel. Church services are held here regularly and a rosary is recited weekly.
