December 17, 2024, Church of the Visitation of Mary (Mariä Heimsuchung)

St. Margaretha The branch church was built in the first half of the 18th century. The hall building, which faces east, consists of a three-bay nave and a recessed, single-bay choir with a semicircular apse in the ground plan. The exterior is structured primarily by so-called bass violin windows, which indicate that Johann Georg Hirschstötter, the Landshut court master mason who was in office at the time of construction, was the architect. A two-story sacristy is attached to the south of the choir. The ground floor of the projecting west tower also serves as a vestibule and contains the only church portal. The tower is built on an almost square ground plan and is structured by corner pilasters. It contains the tower clock with four dials, the bell cage and a round-arched sound opening on each side. Since the end of the 19th century, the upper part has been formed by an eight-sided pointed helmet over four triangular gables. Inside, the nave and choir are covered by a flat barrel vault with pointed arches, which is decorated with ceiling paintings. The choir end in the form of an apse is vaulted by a half-dome. The walls are divided by flat pilasters with multi-profiled capitals. These can also be found on the basket-arched choir arch. The Rococo high altar dates from the time when the church was built. Its structure is supported by four pilasters and two twisted columns. On the altarpiece, Saint Mary is depicted as the Queen of Heaven, surrounded by numerous saints and hosts of angels. In the altarpiece there is a dove of the Holy Spirit, which is cleverly illuminated by the window behind it in the apex of the choir. The tabernacle, decorated with numerous volutes, contains a figure of the Risen Christ in a niche; on top, the Lamb of God sits enthroned on the book with the seven seals. The two side altars are baroque and were probably built at the end of the 17th century. Their structure is supported by two twisted columns; the extension is designed with a broken gable and shell top. In place of the altarpieces are figures of Saints Wolfgang (left) and Anna. Also worth mentioning is the group of figures of Anna-Selbdritt, which is attached to the southern nave wall. The organ of the Expositurkirche Mariä Heimsuchung was created in 1955 by Friedrich Meier from Plattling. Source: www.wikipedia.de

Filial Church of St. John the Baptist The Catholic Church, St. John the Baptist, is a filial church of the Essenbach parish The attractive Rococo building was built by an unknown builder around 1750 on the site of an earlier church. The old church was also located on the same site, as the old foundation walls that still exist prove. The current building has a slightly recessed choir closed in a semicircle. The nave is rounded at the transition to the choir. The sacristy is located at the head of the choir and is also closed in a semicircle. The spire of the church is on the west side. The tower is beveled at the corners in the upper part and has a modern pointed roof over four gables. The ceiling painting in the nave depicts the martyrdom of St. Sebastian and dates from 1756. As a church account in the Landshut district archive shows, the high altar dates from 1751. It has four columns, the outer pair being twisted. The baptism of Christ is depicted on the altarpiece. There are also two beautiful figures on the high altar. On the left are St. Notburga and on the right St. Apollonia as painted wooden figures. The two side altars in the nave, each with two twisted columns, are from roughly the same period as the high altar. St. Anna is depicted on the altarpiece of the northern side altar and Immaculata on the southern one. The side panels with baroque foliage, which were made in the years after 1700, are also very beautiful. On the north wall of the nave is the wonderful, late Gothic and painted wooden figure of St. Mary. This valuable, 1.20 m high carving was created around 1470 in the Landshut carving school. The church was completely renovated between 1971 and 1985; the preservation and care of their church has always been a concern for the people of Bruckbach. www.pfarramt-essenbach.de

October 2, 2023, Wayside Shrine

The term Marterl or Marter is often used as a generalization for wayside shrines and other field monuments. The Austrian/South German name is derived from the word martyr/martyr (ancient Greek μάρτυς mártys “witness”, “blood witness”).

In 1889 a Way of the Cross to the chapel on Kapellenberg with fourteen stations was built as a staircase from the town center. For this purpose, stone columns with colored depictions made of cast zinc were erected. In 2004, the Ergoldsbach Women's Association added a fifteenth station, “Jesus Rises from the Dead”.

October 2, 2023, Lourdes Chapel

In 1825 there was already a newly built chapel on the Kapellenberg. This was dismantled in 1895 and moved to Kläham. This has now been demolished - only a bell from the Ergoldsbach period remains. In the same year, the then Ergoldsbach pastor Igl had the new mountain chapel built on the northern outer wall of the rampart fortress. It was completed in 1896 and is dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes. Therefore, today it is usually referred to as the Lourdes Chapel. Church services are held here regularly and a rosary is recited weekly.

In the middle of the forest, between Weihenstephan and Bruckbach, there are three easily recognizable burial mounds. A nice destination to hike.
