The Mehlbach pond, which has nothing to do with flour or mills, because it has too little water for a mill and has never powered one, is currently being renovated by Hessen Forst. The dam is being rebuilt. For those interested: The Mehlbach is actually called Molbach, which comes from the Middle High German expression mol and means newt, lizard. Fifty years ago the first syllable was pronounced short, i.e. Melbach, or even Mölbach. That is why the old cadastral maps of the Grand Duchy still say Molbach. It's a bit of a shame that the original name has been parodied here out of ignorance. See the Lagis-Hessen State Archives for more information! I've attached a map section to the pictures. It used to be one of the ponds that had to supply the fish, when meat was still Sunday food.

Count Gottfried V of Ziegenhain had a castle built between 1246 and 1271 on a rock that extends far into the Ohm valley and is located on a main traffic route with a ford through the flat Ohm. The castle was destroyed shortly after its completion by the nearby Hessians, but was rebuilt between 1307 and 1311. In 1450, the Gemünden castle and the Ziegenhain inheritance passed to Hessians and became the official residence. In the 16th century, further buildings were built, including the still impressive tithe barn in 1566. In 1756, the house was rebuilt. A characteristic half-timbered storey with strong, convexly curved struts was built above a massive basement with two blunt-pointed arch portals.

The FFH area extends over approximately 970 hectares and consists of more than 50 percent beech and other deciduous forests and approximately 20 percent grassland that is used for agriculture. Seven protected habitat types can be distinguished. The “Feldatal” sub-area is 454 hectares in size and is predominantly designated as a “Feldatal” nature reserve. The Felda stream with its banks of trees and wet meadows as well as the adjacent forests characterize its landscape. Photo: Green broom moss © BDick Haaksma/Flickr(CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)
