This is a section of the 2-mile circular Bargeman's Walk set in Riverside Park and along the River Itchen in Southampton. The area is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and is teeming with fascinating wildlife. Look out for the likes of salmon, water voles, kingfishers, dragonflies and otters along your way.

January 21, 2021, Type 22 WWII Pillbox

Neighbouring Southampton airport was taken over by the military in 1939 and became a naval training site for ground and air activities. This is one of the defensive pillboxes, a type 22, and now resides in thick undergrowth. Whilst care should be taken, you can explore the bare insides of this hidden pillbox. There's a blast wall and small openings for guns and grenades. It's an eerie reminder of not only the Second World War but how hugely affected Southampton was by it.

A mill has stood on this site for hundreds of years and Woodmill itself was built in the mid-1800s after a fire destroyed the previous iteration. Working as a flour mill, it finally ceased operation in the 1950s and is an activity centre today, offering watersports. Occupying a peaceful stretch of the Itchen, next to a weir, the mill also makes the place where the tidal effect on the Itchen ceases. Above the mill, the Itchen is freshwater.
