Neighbouring Southampton airport was taken over by the military in 1939 and became a naval training site for ground and air activities. This is one of the defensive pillboxes, a type 22, and now resides in thick undergrowth. Whilst care should be taken, you can explore the bare insides of this hidden pillbox. There's a blast wall and small openings for guns and grenades. It's an eerie reminder of not only the Second World War but how hugely affected Southampton was by it.
