Ex NATO Base

Highlight • Structure

NATO's "Scatter" base worked as a radio base from 1962 to 1992, year in which it was abandoned due to the end of the Cold War. Twenty American soldiers lived here and people still rumor about trucks disappearing into stone openings, helicopters hovering above the base at night, hidden missile platforms and secret tunnels within the mountain. After several ideas for a potential recovery, none of which have ever seen the light, it serves as the main starting point of the mountain bike trails of Finale Ligure, as well as the playground of several local street artists, who spray paint their masterpieces onto its crumbling walls.

End of Roller Coaster Trail

Highlight • Trail

I find the last section of the Rollercoaster to be a bit more uncomfortable to drive than the rest, as it tends to be bombed out. Nonetheless, great fun! Below you will be spat out again on the street. There is also a parking lot very close by (just down the road) where you can park your car and drive the uphill on your own.

24H Toboga

Highlight (Segment) • MTB Park

The winding Flowtrail is part of the route of the 24 H of Finale (24hfinale.com). At the top of the Terre Rosse - the hill probably got its name from the reddish shimmering clay - you have a great view.

Witches' Tower

Highlight • Monument

Erected in 1582 as a watchtower to stem the trespassing of Varigotti in the territories of Noli, loyal to Genoa. Varigotti protested with the Spaniards asking for its demolition which was not carried out. Later the tower took the name of "Tower of the witches" as a shame against the women of Varigotti.

Ponte Sordo Roman Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Of the Ponte Sordo only a portion of the access ramp remains today as the structure unfortunately collapsed. As for the other bridges along the route, the facing is of the "petit appearil" type, therefore made up of squared blocks aligned and bound with carefully finished mortar. Archaeological excavations here have brought to light part of the Roman road built by means of river pebbles compacted with a beaten clay and earth (glareata road), over four meters wide and bordered by shoulder boards made with the same technique used for the bridge.

The last section is the one that requires the best riding technique. Since I've already had a long day, I prefer to skip it and meet up with my tireless companions down at the little church 😁

Osteria del Din is located at 1,000 meters above sea level with a splendid view of the sea. The menu offers dishes prepared with fresh homemade pasta, game, 0 km vegetables and many other specialties. It is also a great place for a coffee break or an aperitif during or after a bike ride. A welcoming oasis to taste genuine dishes and enjoy the view.

Torre delle Streghe (tower of the witches) is a small tower, or what is left of it. Apparently build in 1582 as a watchtower to stop trespassers from Varigotti into the territory of Noli.
