April 23, 2025, Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide Nature Park

In the Nossinter / Schwinzer Heide Nature Park, you can expect vast pine forests, lakes, moors, dunes, wet meadows, dry grasslands, heaths, and quiet villages. About 60 percent of the area is forest, which is managed in a natural way. The remaining land is used for agriculture. Almost all of the lakes are managed by four fishing companies. You can enjoy fresh fish in restaurants, buy it directly, or even fish for yourself. Important goals include the restoration of moors and rivers and visitor management. The park is a European Bird Sanctuary with 143 breeding bird species, including white-tailed eagles, ospreys, and great bitterns. Otters and many rare plants also call this area home. Educational and adventure trails offer fascinating information about nature. You can also learn more about the region in museums such as the Goldberg Local History Museum, the Alt Schwerin Agricultural History Museum, or the Karower Meiler Cultural and Information Center.

The lakes in the northern part of the area are lined by a wide belt of woodland with black alder, willow and marsh fern.[1] The central part of the area consists of peat pits, where the original moor vegetation is replaced by birch-alder swamp forest.[2] Bittern, crane, kingfisher, great grey shrike, snipe, penduline tit and cormorant are breeding birds in the protected area. Numerous species of duck and goose use the open areas to rest in spring and autumn. Numerous species of bat can be observed, including the greater noctule, Daubenton's bat, Natterer's bat, pipistrelle and brown long-eared bat. Otters live in this area. On the lake there are the nature reserves Dune Pine Forest in the west and the northern shores of Langhagensee and Kleiner Langhagensee in the north. At the southern end, near the Wooster Teerofen settlement, there is a small campsite and a heavily silted bathing area. There was a children's holiday camp at this bathing area until the 1990s. There was a military training area for the National People's Army near the lake.

The Krakower Obersee is a nationally known nature reserve of national and international importance and has been closed to all boat traffic since the mid-1970s due to its abundance of water birds. Its eight Werder rivers are breeding grounds for numerous species of songbirds and waterfowl.
