The Demerbroeken form an extensive piece of nature in the wide valley of the river Demer, between Testelt, Zichem, Averbode and Diest. For centuries, this landscape was used as meadowland and by peat cutters, which left traces in the fens and quaking bogs. You will walk through open grasslands, wet swamp forests and along quiet bodies of water. Writer Ernest Claes also found his inspiration here. The backyard of his birthplace borders the Demerbroeken.

Scattered across the marshy grasslands of the Demerbroeken lie small water pools that are important for amphibians and marsh birds. These dug ponds are the remnant of former peat extraction. They now form open water bodies in the landscape.

The educational pond is no longer educational. The information board is still there but has faded from the sun. The cleared area around the two ponds (the former educational one and the "regular" one) is overgrown again with beautiful plants. You have to go through some higher vegetation to walk around the reed-covered banks. Between the two ponds, there is a sandy area, as if they wanted to create a third pond. It is currently bone dry, a landscape full of cracks under your feet. It looks like they are giving everything back to nature.

Educational pond - cleared again so you can see the water instead of the reeds. The small platform is still there.

On January 1, 2022, the city of Aarschot purchased the former Schoonhoven campsite, with the intention of turning it into a fully-fledged relaxation and recreation park. The park is best known for its ponds, but major works are underway here. In 2024, there was already a lot of change with the necessary inconvenience for walkers, but the construction of a swimming pond and a beach sports field simply requires work. By the Easter holidays of this year, some things should already be ready. More about the future of Park Schoonhoven and the plans at https://www.aarschot.be/zwemvijver-en-strandsportveld-park-schoonhoven The plan of the swimming area, the beach sports field and the sunbathing area can be found at https://www.aarschot.be/file/download/20300/8D604DCABF67B2786F8436882871AEA7 You can also stay informed via https://www.aarschot.be/updates-schoonhoven
